Small Block & Big Block Chevy Specific - performance chip

Bought an 88 IROC from a guy that supposedly rebuilt the engine. It took several tries just to get it to pass the emissions test. Now I want to reset the timing but I have never worked on an engine with a performance chip in it. Does this affect how I have to set the timing?
