Me and a friend were talking about which car companies are owned by which car companies. Half way though the conversation we were both very confused does anyone know a site or have a list of which car companies own each other?

I am working from memory, but I think this list is up to date and accurate.

GM - Chevy, Pontiac, Buick, Cadillac, GMC, Saturn, Hummer, Holden, Saab, Opel, Vauxhaul, Daewoo (part at least), Izuzu (part). They used to own part of Subaru (Fuji Heavy Industries).

Ford - Ford, Mercury, Lincoln, Volvo, Jaguar, Mazda (part)

DCX - Mercedes-Benz, Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, Mitsubishi (used to own part, might still)

Volkwagen - Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, Bentley, Lamborghini

BMW - BMW, Land Rover, Rolls-Royce, Cooper

Renault - Renault, Nissan, Infiniti

Honda - Honda, Acura

Toyota - Toyota, Lexus, Scion

Fiat - Fiat, Ferrari, Maserati

I think Ford still owns Land Rover. They have them listed on their main page.

I remember seeing a layout in a magazine, it was called something like the automotive universe. It was pretty cool to see what companies GM had stake in. Someone might have posted in online. I'll see if I can find it.

GM wholly owns Daewoo's automotive business, and owns small portions of Suzuki, Isuzu, and Subaru (used to own bigger portions of those three until recently).
GM also owns small portions of Delphi and Hughes, both of which used to be wholly owned, but were spun off years ago.
Just for clarification. :)

GM: GM sold it's stake in Subaru this past year and Toyota ended up picking up the shares (hence the reason the Tribeca based Saab 9-6x was canned). They also sold their stake in Isuzu to raise an extra 300 million in April 2006. GM also reduced it's stake in Suzuki to 3% to raise 2 billion dollars back in March. Yah I'm a nerd.

DCX: DCX which at one time held up to a 37% stake in Mitsubishi finally sold it's stock in the company last November. I believe the last joint ventures in which DCX and Mitsubishi have collaborated on is Chryslers new lineup of GEMA World Engines (which they also collaborated with Hyundai on) and the GS platform which will underpin DCXs next gen of compact and midsize cars. The following is a list of cars underpinned by GS.

2007 Dodge Caliber
2007 Mitsubishi Outlander
2007 Chrysler Sebring
2007 Jeep Compass
2007 Jeep Patriot
2008 Dodge Avenger (Stratus replacement)
2008 Mitsubishi Lancer
2009 Chrysler PT Crusier replacement.

In addtion to the manufacturers you listed, DCX also consists of Maybach, Smart, Freightliner, FUSO (Mitsubishi's commercial truck operations), Sterling, Western Star, Thomas, Setra and Orion. I can understand not including the commercial trucks portion but shame on you for missing Maybach and Smart. lol.

Volkswagen Group: First off, PORSCHE IS NOT OWNED BY VOLKSWAGEN. ON THE CONTRARY, PORSCHE OWNS A 25% STAKE IN VOLKWAGEN. It used to be something like 18% but they upped their stake last year to prevent a takeover. Read: PORSHCE OWNS A 25% STAKE IN VOLKSWAGEN. JUST BECAUSE THE TWO COLLABORATE ON OCCASSION IT DOESN MEAN THAT VW IS THE PARENT COMPANY. THIS IS A COMMON MISCONCEPTION. The big deal is that Porsche remains one of if not the only major sports car manufacturer that is sitll independent.

Moving on, the Volkswagen Group consists of two branches, the VW branch and the Audi branch. The VW branch consists of VW, Bentley, Skoda, Bugatti and VWs commercial vehicles operations. The Audi branch consists of Audi, Lamborghini and SEAT.

BMW: BMW is the parent company of BMW MINI (not Cooper) and Rolls-Royce. Land Rover as already mentioned was bought up by Ford's PAG.

Toyota: As I mentioned, Toyota has picked up GMs stake in Subaru. Toyota also owns stake in Yamaha.

K I gotta bounce out of here for now but I'll be back to help work on this list later. Peace out guys and gals.

I knew I would miss a couple as shown below. I didn't add the above companies because the question asked for car companies, not suppliers or alternate business ventures.

Ferrari is a subsidiary of FIAT Group or Fiat S.p.A. if you will as are Maserati, Alfa Romeo and Lancia. Fiat also has it's own division known of course as Fiat.

daewoo makes the suzuki forenza and verona as well as the chevrolet aveo. porsche owns ~20% of the volkswagen group. as for lotus, after colin chapman died in 1982, they were taken over by gm, followed by bugatti, and now today the malaysian company proton.

LOL. You're going to have to edit this list in the near future if Ford offloads Aston Martin anytime soon. Shit changest fast in the automotive world.
