Can you use a LS1 T-56 on a Gen I SBC? I currently am running a 4+3 doug nash and have a spare LS1 T-56.
Do I have to change the input shaft or bellhousing?

the bellhousing bolts up you just have to leave one bolt out that doesnt line up, ive heard of it done before. as for the input shaft its longer for the ls1 you have to get a different one and the correct hydraulics

I think you'd save yourself a big headache by just getting an LT1 T56. The input shafts are different.

T-56's aren't exactly cheap. It may be easier if he has the resources to change the input shaft.

That's true, but he could probably sell the LS1 trans, buy an LT1 trans and have a little extra $$$
You need the adapter plate. McLeod and others sell it. Lets you use the LS1 T56 in the same manner that the "aftermarket" T56 bolted up. It would help immensely if you also posted into what car this was being installed.

All you have is the transmission, you don't have the LS1 bellhousing? If that's the case then you basically need to convert to a LT1 style T56 using the front adapter plate and shorter shaft. You can also contact D&D because I think they make LS1 input shafts that are cut down and splined like an LT1. You do this because the LS1 shaft is larger and stronger.
If you convert to a LT1 style you will need to use a pull type clutch, if you leave it a modified LS1 tranny you can use a hydraulic TO bearing and a push type clutch.

Sure ya can.I am running a '99 T56 with the McLeod adapter and my stock '82 mechanical clutch linkage and clutch/flywheel components..No hydraulics here.
You can use your bell and the LS1 input shaft as is.You more than likely will have to run an extended pilot bushing from McLeod as well...I use the 8-1094.

You could always buy the SFI bell from Mcleod for the T56 to Gen 1 SBC. It comes with the block plate, bell, and aluminum spacer ring and will protect your feet at the same time in case there is an explosion.
I wouldn't swap to an LT1 input shaft. The LS1 T/O bearing will allow you to use a much larger selection of clutches for your car instead of limiting you to one design.
