Car Crazy: Are you going to bump up the horsepower on your Saleen Mustang cars when Ford adds horsepower in 2009?

Steve Saleen: Yes we are, I just talked to Alan Mulally (Ford Motor Co. Chief Executive) about the 2009 facelift year and what kind of added power the GT and Cobra will get.

CC: What kind of added power did he talk about for the 09 model year?

Saleen: Nothing extreme, it's only a facelift year, but enough to make my current engine upgrades obsolete. They're aiming for 350 horsepower out of the V8 in the GT, and they're only adding about ten or fifteen horsepower to the GT500.

CC: Can you give us an idea of what you'll do to for your Saleen models?

Saleen: We don't know yet exactly, but we've had many meetings on what we want. We're aiming to get around 385 horsepower out of the S281 3 Valve with around 390 lb-ft of torque. The S281 Supercharged model will get 500 horses even with around 460 lb-ft of torque, and expect about a fifteen horsepower increase on the (S281) Extreme Mustang over the 2007 model (that's 565 horsepower and 535 lb-ft of torque).

CC: That's a big power increase on all cars, are the prices going to change?

Saleen: Not counting inflation, the prices should stay the same.

CC: Are the rumors of you teaming up with GM true or false?

Saleen: My team just worked with GM last month on the Transformers movie. We had such a good relationship with them that we are infact going to team up with them on future projects?

CC: What future projects?

Saleen: Well the Camaro project is one of them, I've watched from a distance while they've been putting the production model together. I think it would be foolish on our part if we didn't get a part of that action (Steve laughs).

CC: So are you going to do your own versions of the new Camaro?

Saleen: It's not legally official right now, but that's what we're hoping for.

CC: What kind of upgrades will you make, have you seen the engine GM is using in the Camaro?

Saleen: I hope I don't get in trouble with GM for saying this, but they're using a 6.2 liter 450 horsepower engine for the premium V8 in the 2009 Camaro and the base Corvette. The base V8 will probably be a detuned version of the same 6.2. So we'll just upgrade the 6.2 liter V8 to Saleen level specifications. We're going to upgrade the 6.2 liter V8 if we're given the legal chance by GM. Our base model should have around 485 horsepower, and expect our Extreme Supercharged Camaro to have over 600 horsepower.

So Premium V8=6.2L

That just means that the SS will have a 6.2L, the Z28 will have the LS2 or 5.3L(and hopefully that badass Duramax option we've heard rumors of...), and the base model will have either the 3.9L and/or the 3.6L. And then there is the ZL1 with the LS7, because you just KNOW GM will not let the GT500 be more powerful...

You know what would be cool. If there was an SS6.2L and an SS6.0L at the same time...

The last base model was a 3.8li... somehow I don't see them stepping down to the 3.6, they will most likely go with the 3.9.

Why would GM let Steve Saleen work on thier Chevrolet? Is he trying to create a monopoly? :jest:

Someone posted a link up of that car for some movie. A Transformer movie or something.

Search for the thread, there were more pictures. Not sure how definite something like this is, or if it was just for the movie.

Glad to hear Saleens performance will be increasing on his 2009 vehicles.

As it sits right now I see most of Saleens work with Mustangs as overpriced.

I'd imagine he needs to move to GM products to cover his overhead...

Might be cool but his pricing is pretty wacked as far as I can tell.

I'd pass on his work personally. Too expensive.

That is the only noteworthy point to be taken from the interview. The Saleen/Camaro deal was for the movie, and no doubt they got to BSing while at work...I highly doubt Saleen will have any connection to the new Camaro.

However, his revealing power levels, and engine size(as has been rumoured elsewhere-GM High Tech, etc) is very interesting.

A 450is HP top of the line Camaro should be capable of beating a Shelby Mustang, and a similarly powered C6 base Corvette would make alot of sense in 2009, several years after the introduction of the C6 with the Z06 and "Sting Ray/Blue Devil" lilely to be in production at 600+ hp.

I agree...his stuff is NOT worth the $$$$. You can do better on a budget with your own wrenching. Of course...someone with deep pockets will want all that + warranty ect, blah blah blah. :dunno: I'll take my money else were personally.

I can't wait for the 09s to come out...that way all yalls will be sellin' your 4th Gens CHEAP!

Kind of like how we all feel bad for the C5 only having 350? And the C4 having what 200~ in crossfire injection form? :jest: About the only ones we don't feel sorry for are the ZR1 and the old Sting Rays.

i believe they (Saleen) built the Camaros for the Transformers movie. 450 hp for Camaro, badass i hope its light than the Cobra so it will beat it.

I wonder if GM actually pulled a good old Ford ala Carol Shelby or a good natured GM "Smokey Yunick".

Sure Steve, we'll let you tune the new Camaro...btw, what do you think about us putting these motors in them and what could you do with them?

i'm telling you the way to sell the #'s of camaros they need to maintain production is with lots of options and configurations.

From CamaroZ28.com

There was some heartburn when the Saleen pics hit with the Transformer Cars....'cause Saleen has a relationship with Ford.

There's nothing to stop Saleen from doing something aftermarket with the Camaro......but as of now, I know of no plans..........

And as to engine selections.....way too many guesses -- very little fact.

GOOD!

My opinion of Steve Saleen (which was never THAT high) definately just went down a notch.
