The M20, M21 and M22 muncies were used in passenger cars (no trucks) from 1963 to early 1975. I swapped a mid 60's M21 muncie into my daily driver '85 silverado in my sig. Good little trans to bang gears with.:D

go with the m21 alum. trans - the m22 was used in high performance applications & was fine spline input shaft ( rare & costly trans) - have owned several m20's & m21's
both good transmissions -- the m20 was a cast iron case though

M22 is a close ratio 4 speed. good for 1/4 mile racing, and road racing, nothing more. not a good crusing tranny because if you go with a higher rear end gear to off set the low gearing of the "Rock Crusher" then you lose the point of getting the M22 anyways........it all depends on what you want.
M21 is the most common.

edit: actully no i retract that statment. i was getting two different transmissions mixed up. difference between the M20-M21 and the M22 was the M22 had gears that had straighter teeth on the gearset, which made them easier to turn. if you find an original M22 hang on to it, they are rare and usually if you look at the numbers on the case, you cant really tell anything because the gears could have been changed. there were only like 500 gearsets made for the M22 that didnt leave the factory in M22 transmissions. so if the tranny has been rebuilt, it wont have the original straighter gears in them.

How do they compare to a T56? I alway hear old school guys talking about them

T56 is a different animal. similar to how the old powerglide is a dinosaur compared to the new 4L60E. obviously the Muncie's were good trannys, but they were good for their time.

ya hes going to use it as a weekend cruiser/ drag racer so ill tell him to prob go with the M21 bc he prob doesn't need to go with a close ratio bc of the highway. Thanks for all the info.

A bone stock t56 will take more abuse than any muncie, but they're lots more $$$ and make for a more difficult swap in most cases.

Only problem is it's nearly impossible to tell if it's an original m22. There are several manufacturers producing the straighter cut m22 gearsets today. You can build an entire m22 with stronger aftermarket parts, the case & tail shaft included for around $2k.
