just remember that while they do work, in all reality you arent being radared (sp?) very often. you end up getting so used to false alarms, that when it picks up a faint signal, you will prob ignore it until its too late. but i have one and i like it. its the most high end cobra. i dont remember the #

Valentine1, beltronics, and escort seem to be the 3 most popular/best... but they are not cheap...

i have the escort 8500 X50 and i love it. not cheap though.

escort just came out with a new detector called the 9500 (i think). it eliminates false alerts by using a GPS. whenever you pass a known false alert you push a button and it stores the location and frequency of the radar source so you don't ever have false alert again. it will detect any new radar sources that are found in the blocked area though so if there is a cop there it will still show up. i have heard that it doesn't have any better detection than the 8500 x50 though. it costs about $450 compared to the ~$350 for the 8500 x50.

My cobra detector has saved my ass at least 6-7 times over the past 2 yrs. I use it in every vehicle I own, each vehicle has a windshield mount and I just take the unit with me.

I think the reason it works so good is most cops in NJ seems to use the old radar bands, ( X and Ka) which are easy to pick up. If they used POP mode laser guns I think it would be quite ineffective. And yes, make sure you buy the high end model if you go w/ a cobra, I think mine is the XRS 9700. I've also heard beltronics is very good, thats what I'll probably upgrade too next.

If you get one, read the book as it tells you how you can filter out the nuisance warnings w/ different sensitivity settings depending where you are (city, highway etc.).

i have a cheap 80 dollar cobra and it has saved my ass NUMEROUS times....im SURE the 300 dollar radars are much better but even a cheapy is MUCH better than nothing...picks up k and ka band fantastic......x band seems to no longer be used by cops and gives tons of false alarms..very annoying.....as said previous laser is useless with this and most alarms but cops very rarely use it as they have to point at your plate for it to work....lazy? :D with k band they just leave it on

i have a 8500 also, the only ticket i've gotten was wreckless driving for "drifting" through an intesection light, no one was around but right after i did it the cop saw tire smoke and me. it's saved me around 5 times, and i feel naked without it on
