I now that this is not a LS1 or LT1 question is but maybe someone might know a answer.

I was serching for an engine for my 68 Impala SS427 clone and bought a 496´shortblock with new piston rings for 500$.
The engine looks like it never ron and the seller told me that it have around 3000 miles on it. He further said it was a dealer take out as the
engine had a termic problem.

I did not now enough about the engine and bought. Now I found out that it is very heavy to get parts for this motor.
I have only the block and the rotating assembly.
I plan to save money to buying the big package from raylar with the
assembled alu heads, the throttle body, cam, rockers ect... but than I still need the oil and water pump, oil pan (if someone changed it for boat-use I would be interested), wiring harness and all that computers and sensors as I did not find a carb-manifold for this engine. Does anybody know which parts are interchangeable which other enginges from which years. Are there any other aftermarked parts like the harness or computers or headers for use in a car than the ware from raylar.
It is impossible to find anything in eBay with the terms GM 8.1/ 496 / Vortec ect...
If someone got anything to sell please tell me.
I have an offer for another 496, and the seller says it is complete,
for further 500$, but actally if I take aftermarked parts I could use the money better I think (If I can get all I wnat of course).

Thanks and best regards

I am from Vienna/ Austria/ Europe but have a friend in Niagara NY who sends containters onces or twice a week and he arranges the shipping inside the USA except it is only a small part like a computer or something like this, that gets directly to me.

I hope you understood that I have the gen VII 496 Vortec BBC.
I can find absolutely nothing in the web or at eBay.
Do you have parts for it. If heard that all that crank-and cam sensor stuff is not necessery for this engine. Will the computer from smaller vortec like the 5,3 or 6,0 I think, also work with it.
Can I use a Painless harness or do you have a stock wiring harness.
I really would like to plant this engine in my 68 Impala convertible. Is the only aftermarket company raylar?
Please I take any Informtion I get.

Thanks and best regards

Is there a setting in the profile that I get a messege to my e-mail account if someone wrote a new post to my threat. The Forum is damn big and to find the postings is not that easy.

Thanks Hannes

You will love a big built bbc chevy in that car. My dads got a 67 caprice with a built 468 bbc. It runs really good for such a big car.

Have you looked into the stand alone computer system's available from the aftermarket? FAST, Accel, etc.

Hi bird, I am looking for stand alone harness and ecm but I did not know that Accel or FAST make them too.

What about parts like alternator, waterpump or starter, will that fit
from any other chevy engine?

Thanks and best regards

hrmm, I thought the 8.1L in that Gen came in the Silverado 2500HD series and I also thought it was 502ci motor. or is it a 8.2L that is 502ci???

either way should all the SilveradoHD 02' parts fit that engine?

The number to FAST is 877-334-8355. Or http://www.fuelairspark.com/ContactInfo/default.asp?Type=Support

The number to ACCEl is 216-688-8300. Or www.accel-ignition.com

Thanks Bird.

I have now the possibility to get a re-programmed computer and a stand alone harness for around 500$
Quite nice deal, seems like the guys from PCMamerica are very able and nice people.

The bloody email notification still does not work.

Did your motor come with any alternator brackets? The starter can be replaced with any of the aftermarket mini starters if it still mounts to the block on the passenger side of the vehicle. If it does then check to see if the mounting bolts are straight accross from each other or if they are diagonally from each other. The older SBC/BBC had bolth mounting positions.
