Small Block & Big Block Chevy Specific - Blown/Alky injected BBC

Whats your guys opinion on the Blown/Alky injected BBC engines?

There is a local guy with one in his 55 chevy (tube car) and I have been meaning to ask him about it but he only gets it out on the street about twice a season so its hard to catch him.

I know the upkeep on them is more then a pump gas car.

Whats the maitenence per season on one for a guy who just plans to trailer it to cruise ins and race it at the track every now and then?

Is this idea just plain retarted? I am almost done with aircraft maintenance school (one more class) and find out in the morning if I have a job set in stone at a company that does sheetmetal fab on aircraft. Also plan to start taging TIG welding classes and advanced chassis building classes (local college has a program for it).

I do realize it would need a Lenco or something.

If one had the knowledge to build a car to handle one of those monsters (over 1,000hp) how much do you think it would cost to do yourself?
I know a chunk of it is in the chassis? I would cut out the floor and go sheetmetal and full tube chassis.

Keep in mind I do not plan on doing this anytime soon.

Blown alcky motors car run all day if setup right. The problem is with the alky they use A LOT of fuel compared to normal gas setups plus the methanol tends to dry out seals (EX you'd be femptying the fuel lines after anytime driving the car cause the fuel pump would suddenly spring a leak once left sitting) But convert it over to gas and you can go all day. Plus these motors are a blast with the instant torque. Just talk around find people that run it its a fun combo. And no need for a Lenco or anything a glide or 400 would work too.

Whats odd is that I have heard some guys that run it say they don't have to empty the lines and their cars run fine.To be on the safe side I would most likely put a fuel pump switch in and kill motor y cutting the fuel that way the lines are empy.

Some guys say to change the oil every run but others say they change theirs every 50 runs or so.


I wonder how hard it would be to quiet one down enough to be driven on the street but could easily open it back up again. Monster cut out maybe.

On a blown alcohol motor typically you run a belt driven fuel pump the blower hat will have 2 jets a main and high speed lean out and thats the most tuning you get out of it besides timing

An alky motor will consume about twice as much fuel as a gas motor but fuel is soo much cheaper you end up saving

As far as chassis a 25.5 would be pretty much mandatory but I dont see the need to go to a full tube job

And alcohol is illegal for street use so forget about driving it on the street

But a healthy big block with a 14-71 blown alky motor is gonna be a complete monster like low 8s with no tuning on a 10 inch tire car kind of monster

This stmt is nto fully true. On a basic setup yes. But as shown with the motor he posted up it had port nozzles which allows for fuel tuning per cylinder. :drive: And what are they gonna do test to see if you're using alcohol compared to 110 haha. I say go for it!

Whoops my mistake............ and you better have a huge fuel cell if you plan on driving it on the street for any period of time I've seen one of these go through about a gallon of fuel just putting it on a trailer :drive:

The local guy with the 55 drives his on the street RARLEY. Mostly around parking lots and or jsut lets it run for people. The cops keep an eye on him for the npise more then the fuel.

I guess when I said full tube I meant 25.5 LOL.

I heave heard of plenty of those cars going 7's all day long tuned up. 6's with really light cars. I mean REALLY light cars.

they use alot of fuel just cruising around--you can run a upper lube fuel additive to keep the alcohol from eating at the lines & fittings--usually change oil every race or 2
we have a 72 camaro 496 with a 8-71,true 10.5 car--stock rear frame rails,ladder bar & coil overs,3500 lbs --runs 5.60's-128 1/8 mile on 10% over drive & we have driven it at cruises a few times--just don't get stuck in traffic

you need a VERY good driveline--we broke 1 input shaft,driveshaft,rear end gears,high gear in trans 3 times,& a drum in the trans :bang: :bang:

I wish I could build it now but still have one more class to finish for school then I am going to buy a house THEN things will start to take shape.

On the comments about a car burning a gallon to get it on the trailer.... I have seen out local guy just shut it off and winch it onto the trailer lol.

Yeah the trailer didnt have a winch and t was kind of wet out so pushing it up the ramp would have been a total bitch .....

Not to mention its just an awesome excuse to fire it up in the middle of march and make some noise with it for a while LOL

u dont need to get a house. lol hell im 20 and buildin a 455 blown alky car and i aint movin out till it is done. and what color is this 55? if it is red iv seen it run and WOW.

I am 23 and almost 24 and need to get out. Not to mention I live in a subdivision with lots of young kids.

The subdivision management people would ban my car LOL. No really, they would.

My Iroc is an EFI turbo car that was running on gas and ended up switching to methanol. Haven't had it to the track, but lots of street miles and 4 nights worth of dyno tuning. Even though stoich is 6.5:1 on the methanol you can run it much leaner when your in a low load condition. I switch to a gas tune and run gas through it every so often to keep it flushed. No corrosion issues so far.
Down side is the volume of fuel you have to run on a boosted methanol combo when your making power. I reached the limits of an aeromotive eliminator pump at 4500 rpm with only 5 lb springs in my waste gates. The plus side is the car continued to gain considerable power even when it started to lean out. A gas motor would have blown up at that point. Other down side is it takes forever to warm up. As far as oil contamination goes, if you running zero gap rings and if the motor gets to a high enough operation temp, any alcohol that makes it into the crank case should evaporate off.

I allways fire my car up and check the gauged then let it run for a while before I get it out so waiting longer is not a problem.

I have also been thinking about a big Turbo BBC car on Alky....
