I'll start my BBC build soon and I am looking for ideas. Can someone give me a good proven budget big block combo that will get at least 650 hp.

Look at the new Chevy Hi Performance mag., they have a 496 BBC making 622 HP in it. I went to their web site but they still have last month's info on it.

Look in Engine Masters at their Big Block Shootout. They made a 454 with basically off the shelf parts and Crane cam and made around 600-650. They used OEM crank and rods IIRC.

Are you looking for a race only setup?

My little 468 works good. It's just a 2 bolt main with a mild cam and runs well down in the 9's (granted my car works good). It's not too complicated, the heads/intake are ported on but not matched. Only exotic things really is that it's on alcohol and has a vacuum pump.

Thanks for the input guys really appreciate it. what I'm looking for is a race motor but not a wild one I want something I can drive for little time to get me to our local weekend gathering which is 5 minuets from home
What I'm thinking about now is 496 stroker with top end kit and solid lifter cam, with the possibility of using nitrous
Any ideas ?

do you want it to fit under the hood?

a fogger system in a 496 would make way more than 650 that would be only on motor

So I don't need it?

I'll see If my budget allow me to install it I'll for just in case I need the extra power

yes that's my plan

with a high compression ratio and good flowing heads u will make 650 easy, now with a fogger system u can make 1000hp easy depends what route u wanna take

What's your idea of budget? Right now my short block is about $4K:

502 block - 750
Eagle 4.25 Crank - 500
Crower 6.385 Rods - 290
Ross Pistons/Rings - 1000 (no hook - up :( )
Bret Solid Roller 4/7 Swap - 490
Bearings - 150 approx.
Assembly & Balance - 800
Timing Set - 65

If you stick with a OEM RA and off the shelf cam you can save a lot of coin cause you can pick up a complete junkyard motor for around $400 or less.

A 496 setup wouldn't be bad. Ohio Crankshaft has a nice deal on a 496 rotating assembly, if/when I build the spare block I have it'll probably be a 496 (I'm posting this because I don't think any sponsors offer the kit).

My dad has a 540 and I've considered one for my car as well but the motor in it just works so well.

For $300 this winter I'll have a cam built specific to my car. I know a guy that went from high 5.80's in the 1/8 to low 5.60's just by having a cam built to the car. I also know someone with a 3300 pound 66 Chevelle that had a 502 that wasn't too outrageous and had the cam built to the car and it ran 6.1X's on the back bumper. Seems like money well spent to me.

I figured I would just throw this out there, but how adaptable are the older Caddy 502 motors? Are they a different beast all together?

proxemics
06-01-2007, 05:50 PM
I don't know about the caddy 502 and the possibility of me getting one is zero because they don't exist were I live.
for the budget thing honestly I didn't plan my budget yet I just want to see first how others did with their motors so I can get a general idea then I'll decide my plan
I can get a complete BBC even for free here because they are every where and some people can't stand their fuel consumption so they get rid of them

ulakovic22

That would be great if you could get one for free. That would be at least a free block and there is nothing wrong with a 454, you don't have to stroke it to reach your goals. Actually a stroker will just give you way more torque than you really need. A lot of people can't hook a BBC that well anyway cause of the low end grunt off the line.

will I want to build this motor once so I want to do something that will satisfy me for a long period of time

waht stroker kit to use ? and what cam ?

any idea about heads and intake will be great

proxemics

I'll use eagle forged kit, dart 325 heads, comp cam solid roller cam Duration 308/ 308, Lift .652/ .652, Holley 4150 carb and team G intake.

how is this combo sound?

My 83 has run 10.46@136 spinning the tires on what he remembers was a 300 shot. Fairly stock rear suspension.

Off the shelf Dart intake, off the shelf aluminum bow tie heads, and a pretty restrective air cleaner.

I plan to have everything ported out and do the suspension. Who knows what it will run. Its so choked out that it droped like a second on the bottle. It may have only been one stage. Who knows, last time it was raced by the previous owner was like 1995! Just an idea of what you can get out of a little old 468 and a REAL BG carb :D

What type headers are you running?
And is their any chassis major modification?
Can you post pics of your car?
Thanks again and good luck with your car hope every thing solve after the porting job

thanks man I already did and I got alot of answers
http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/engine-swap/425642-bbc-650hp-combo.html
the reason why I'm asking about headers because there are different types of headers for this swap I just want to know which one JUICED96Z is using
:)

I'll go with hooker super competition headers but I heared that they are not good for drag racing application

JUICED96Z

Headers are custom from what I can tell, the entire exhaust is one off. It has two 2.5 inch pipes that run off each primary nack to the straigh threw mufflers.

On the passenger side one of the tubes has about a quarter inch clearance to the wheel well. Other side has a dent in one for the steering shaft thing (sorry really tired)

With the BBC in it get longer batter cables if you plan to you an aftermarket batter like an optima. The factory negative I think it is will strech so much that it almost touches the header.

In the future I plan to have some better headers custom made. These look a lot like hookers but towards the collectors they push out towards the side of the car. Don't hut the engine and tranny like 4th gens do. Maybe this is normal.
I will find out the header size and all next time I am over were the car is located.

TRUST ME ON THIS. SPEND THE MONEY FOR CUSTOM MADE HEADERS WITH A BBC IN THERE!!!!!!!!!!

Cover up the wheel wells and and all good and tape everything off, its a tight fit :D

Ill try and get pics in the near future.

Ed Quay sells real nice headers for 3rd Gen's with BBC's. They will cost around half what a custom built set runs. Quay makes 2-1/8, 2-1/4 & 2-3/8 sizes. I have a set of Quay 2-1/8 stepped to 2-1/4 with a 4" collector on my BBC 3rd Gen.

Hi Would you mind sharing some specs to the 461 in the sig. thanks
Sure. It was a budget motor that ran really well for what it was, till I broke a rod in half and ruined the block. I used the same top end and built a 509 short block and ran some n/a 9.30's with it.

461
GM .030 over 454 LS7 4 bolt main block (BBC not the new SB LSX) :)
GM LS6 factory steel crank
Power Detroit Steel billet rods (rod broke in less than 200 passes)(think there called Howard's now sold by competition products)
Wiseco 13.5 pistons
Dart Pro1 310's port match and mild clean up only, milled to 110cc
Edelbrock Victor 454R + 1" spacer
Crane Roller Cam .714 lift 266-274 dur 108 ls (I don't believe in N20 cams inless your spraying 400+)
Crane gold rockers and stud girdle
Old Style Barry Grant 1050 Dominator (flowing 1140)
NOS Big Shot kit .087 N20 .096 fuel jet (around 250 HP)

The car weighed 3260 with me in it then. Had a JW 4600 convertor and JW Ultra Glide
It ran a best of 6.38 @ 110 1/8 mile and 9.97 @ 138 1/4 mile.
with 250 shot it ran best 5.54 @ 126 1/8 and 8.83 @ 152 1/4 mile
It ran 10.0's all day on the motor, I normally only run nitrous 1/8 mile, it ran 5.60's most of the time.

Thanks for sharing your specs its much appriciated!!!
Its not the first time I heard of those billets breaking in half. Ironically I believe everysingle one that I heard broke did infact break between 175-225 passes.
P.S do you have any bbc parts laying around?

Don't know if you got an engine elready, and I don't know what you mean by budget, by I know an EASIER way. Buy a new GMPP 572. 650 hp right there.
