alright so i want to do the sbc in an s-10 thing but i have NO MONEY.... im 16 working at a grocery store pulling in 150 bucks a week, nothing special. my buddy will sell me a complete 305 that just needs accesories and a carb for 150 bucks. i know 305's arent great but i know someone that could get me set up for 300 or so hp, which is all i need. should i just save for years for a 350 or go with the cheap alternative? thanks for the help...

i have read countless articles that do build ups on 305's and pull 300 plus hp out of them with a relatively mild cam and head setup. You just have to have the right parts that will work together. if a 305 is all you can find and its cheap and in good shape then go for it. obviously a 350 will yield more in the end but the 305 isnt alltogether the retarded little engine everyone thinks it is.

If you're that young and that broke, what's wrong with putting it in the way it is. Make it reliable and get to school and work as cheap as possible. Worry about HP when you are working full time. Between chasing girls that is.

the 305 isnt alltogether the retarded little engine everyone thinks it is.

i think that comes from all the smog shit that was on there. ive heard of people making some high revving nitrous monsters out of 305s.

Mild smallblock in an S-10 won't be as fast as you think it will be. If you already have the truck and can get the motor in for next to nothing, do it but leave it stock.
One hi-perf part leads to another, which leads to breakage, which leads to suicide when you realize you have several thousand dollars in a blown-up S-10 that only ran mid 15's. :bang:
Ask me how I know these things.

Sorry to make an off topic post, but I do so for your own good. Especially if you are 16, then you don't want to be making statements like the one in your sig. That's not a good/cool thing. People who ride with me, even if I cut a donut in the middle or the road or except a challenge on the street, don't need new underwear. They feel confident in my driving ability even when the engines roaring.

Now, if you mean to say that you are just a really bad driver, then okay. Gotcha. Will bring an extra pair. :)

sharpe- the reason i say that is cus i live in a town of pussies and my friends used to get scared shitless when i drove my mustang fast... id chirp second and theyd freak out.... anyways, its just a joke....

i do kinda want to drop a v8 in.. especially now that a good friend of mine just bought a clean s-10 with a 450hp 355 in it.... as he drove by me he lit them up at 40 mph.... idk, ive got nothing else to spend my money on. im not completely broke tho, i just kinda said that. ive got 500 bucks and if i can learn to control my spending i could have well over a grand saved up in a month... i think i can pull it off for under 2 grand if i can find a wrecked 5 speed camaro to take a tranny out of. also, how stupid would it be to try to retain factory electronics and put a tbi on it? carbs kill my gas mileage and i want it to be streetable. id keep the 305 relatively stock, shoot for 250 hp or so.

we had a 305 in our '86 monte carlo ss and it moved that 4000 lb car surprisingly well... it was only 200 hp but it ran good, bone stock. if anyone knows of any decent 350 longblocks for sale cheap, lemme know.

There is always someone faster. I don't give a damn what anyone says, thinks or tells everyone. I buy a 6 second car (A/PM) and my neighbor buys a 5 second car (A/FC), big deal I got what I could afford, and I live with it. You don't need to waste money on 10, 20, 30 more HP. Hopefully you have a long time to build up to what you want. If you don't, than what do you care, you're gone & buried. Just my thoughts.

dude thats alot easier for you to say... you obviously have some experience. im just looking to make my truck quick so i can have some fun with it, its hard to have much fun in a vehicle if you cant even do a good burnout... i guess i made it seem i want nothing but speed, but i just want the sound, the torque, and the tire roasting capabilities of a v8.

The cheap v8 s10 combo - one of my favorites I had long ago.

Put the 305 in if you want, it won't be super fast, but it will be fun. Soemtimes we outtrick ourselves trying to go faster and faster and lose site of what was fun. My s10 started with a stock mid 70s 2bbl and could burn the tires good.

Alot of good points have been made. I had a 305TPI in my old IROC. While it was a decent, fun motor when it comes down to it, it really will cost pretty much the same as 350. Dig around online. There have been tons of "cheap 350" build ups. Besides, even if you went to a local parts house, snagged a cheap 350 long block and then surfed the web and Ebay for a carb, intake, etc I think you could get it together on the cheap.
