Okay, I replaced all four 6.5 inch speakers with infinity's and added a 4 channel infinity amp, I think its like 650 watts... But I was thinking that the sound could be better. What if I didn't amp the two speakers in the door, let them run off the HU and wire the speaker wire directly to the tweeter and the speaker like the mod that there is a write-up (somewhere in this forum) and leave the back 6.5 inch speakers amp'ed and could I use the remaining power of the amp to drive a sub, like 10' or 12' and get a stealth box? Or will my amp not do that?

Most 4 channels can work as a 3 channel amp, but with what you are talking about; having all four speakers on the amp would be best. Get a second amp for a sub.

What would also help out how it sounds is get some dynamat or edead for your back speakers. That sheet metal sucks for sound.

What model amp is it. I agree though I would get another amp for the sub.

dont do it you wont be able to power the sub efficiently enough torun a decent subwoofer. I am running 2 sets of POLK MOMOs off a 750 4 channel and then a DVC 4 ohm sub on my 801D 800x1 @ 2 (800x1@2) ohms. Do not use the head unit to try to blend the front with the rear speakers you'll end up either blowing 2 channels on the head unit or destroyingthespeakers because you are UNDERPOWERING them. YES! Underpowering your speakers can destroy them too. Besides, it'll be much cleaner and a much fuller sound if you run your components the proper way

Another word for underpowering is clipping which can kill anything in a short amount of time. Basically heats the driver up until it melts. :(

so keep my shit the way it is, thats what your saying right? and if I want to add another sub I need to add another amp?

Wrong!!! Clipping is where the peaks of the sine wave have been cut off. But you are right in your description of the effects. I haven't seen a speaker melt, but I have seen the suspension killed and the coils shorted together in spots from clipping. It's effect is like that of straight DC current being applied in one moment of time over and over. The coils in alot of speakers now can handle it to an extent. But the suspension can't.

How underpowering a speaker can blow it depends on the amp being used. You need enough amplification to handle transients. If you don't have enough reserve power in the amplifier to handle these fast sharp bursts of energy, then you end up clipping the amplifier. That's how Clipping and underpowering are related.

But you can easily clip any amplifier regardless of enough power or not. It has to do with setting the gains. There is a difference. You have to know them.

You're right my bad it was late and wasn't thinking clearly.

richiec77 explained it pretty well but just in case there is some doubt...underpowering a speaker will never damage it!. That is one of the most overstated myths of the audio field. If that were the case then merely turning down the volume (sending less power) would damage speakers.

What damages speakers is distortion - particularly clipping. Clipping is related to the power handling capabilities of the amp not the speaker. Turning up the power (either volume or gains) of an amp beyond its limits causes it to clip the signal to the speaker which leads to damage.

So, running a speaker off of an underpowered amp can cause damage to the speaker but underpowering (not sending enough power to) the speaker will never cause damage.

That's pretty much what I was "tring" to say. If it's underpower (from the headunit amp) and distorts (clipping) then it will sound like crap and could damage his speakers or head unit.

Oh sorry. :emb:
Any way back to the ? at hand. I would power all 4 speakers w/ the amp you have and get a good amp for the subs. If you don't have the cash for that run the front speakers of the amp, sub off of rear channel and nothing in the back seat. This will keep the sound stage up front and might give you a little better sound quality. Probally won't matter much in this small of a car though.
