CHRYSLER CONFIRMS CHALLENGER SRT-8
According to Ward’s Auto, Chrysler Group has confirmed that it will build a high-performance version of the Dodge Challenger. It is expected to launch sometime after the 2009-model base car rolls out. The SRT-8 Challenger will be based on the next-generation LX platform, the LY.
Currently, the LX platform serves the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger sedans and the Dodge Magnum. All of these are expected to migrate to the new LY platform. Despite the price of gasoline, Steve Landry, executive vice president of NAFTA sales, global marketing, service and parts for Chrysler, says the automaker is not concerned. “In recent research with SRT owners, the price of fuel does not come up on the radar as something that concerns them,” Landry says.
SRT-8 products are equipped with a 6.1L, Hemi V8. The Dodge Avenger has been mentioned as a potential SRT candidate. According to Ward’s Auto, Chrysler’s future high-performance lineup will consist of SRT-8 versions of the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, Dodge Magnum, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Viper and Dodge Caliber ?????.

I always thought that they would bring out a SRT 8 verison of the Challenger.
If they have a 500hp version of this car I hope GM answers them.

Chrysler is broke. I'll bet the article was written before the German guy bailed out with all the money.

Chrylser's actually the #3 automaker, a few months ago they surpassed Ford, don't know if they still are though.
Chrysler doesn't have much engineering to do, considering the Challenger is a few hundred lbs lighter than its Charger/300 SRT brothers. With that much less weight, they can add more horsepower without ruining the fuel/emmisions standards (not that the SRTs have great emmisions or fuel economy). I see the Challenger hitting 500 HP no problem

I dont think the Germans left due to sales. I think who ever took them over is still going to push the production of the Challenger. They have a 6.4L Hemi that can get the job done. They just have to make it gas friendly etc.

^^Is there any proof behind that site about the 6.6liter? I've never heard of it before, and I have every mopar magazine for the past 10 years. Not saying that's it not possible, just questioning. Being Chrysler just came out with the 6.4, I don't understand the reasoning behind this.

To answer your ?
No I dont have any proof. So far its just speulation. The only motor I know of for sure is the 6.4. As far as understanding the point of it all I kinda dont also. Unless they plan on getting rid of the V 10 thats in the Viper or something. Opps i dont think I shoud say that too loud.

a hemi viper would be kinda cool although that V10 is pretty hard to beat, how about that 526 c.i. hemi crate engine that mopar sells?

I think it would be cool to. But I think the the die hard Viper fans dont want that motor to go any where. The motor might be the whole idea of the car if u know what Im tryin to say. Would be cool to see the Viper with a V8. Car would finally sound like a V8.

Possible SRT-8?
You can bet on it.
The wierd thing that strikes me is, the 6 cylinder version of this car must sell.
And unlike the Mustang and Camaro, I don't think a big bad Challenger with a 6-banger is going to be the hottest item...but I have been wrong before.
My guess is, Dodge won't produce an army of these cars like Ford did, just build'em as people want them.

Those are some nice pics.
In that video the guy said they test with that car. The reporter should have asked for a E.T.
I think the car will sell pretty good. Im hearing of people signing up on a waiting list just to get information on the car. As just like the new Camaro there isnt any info on it yet.

challenger SS video (http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Features/articleId=120457)
Here you go, they tested the black SS on the 1/4mile. Although this does give you an estimate of the 6.4l potential, but the car isn't going to be build that way. The SS concept has a dana 60 rear, open headers and a 727 trans, far from what they will put in the new one. Either way 11.4 is still really good if you ask me.

That would be nice if the Challenger came with a solid rear axle.
If they could some how build a IRS to hold that much torque maybe the SRT could have that motor. Big fear is that they drop that motor in the SRT and the rear end wont handle it.

Challenger SRT8 Confirmed
We feel a "Thank you, Captain Obvious" is in order for this piece of news that was published all the way back on July 12th within the walled garden of Ward's Auto. The news is simply that Chrysler has confirmed it will build an SRT-8 version of the upcoming Challenger pony car. Chrysler, sorry, the NEW Chrysler, has never issued a release to our knowledge confirming it will sell the Challenger SRT-8, but again, we don't need one because they'd be crazy not to.
All current SRT-8 products use Chrysler's 6.1L HEMI V8, so we would expect the same powerplant for the Challenger SRT-8 producing 425 horsepower and 420 ft-lbs. of torque. However, considering how many high-powered variants of the Mustang are offered, and that Chevy will certainly offer a comparably high-powered version of the Camaro, we expect the SRT-8 to break rank with its siblings and have considerably more power than we're used to seeing in an SRT-8 product. In fact, we may reasonably expect all SRT-8 models to get an commensurate bump in power after the Challenger SRT-8 debuts in late 2009, especially with some like the Dodge Charger, Magnum and Chrysler 300 switching from the current LX platform to a new one code named LY.
BTW - Less than 159 days remain until the production Chrysler Challenger debuts at the Chicago Auto Show next February (check the countdown clock).
