Corvette Blue Devil (finally) gets a name - ZR1
Chevrolet's 650-horsepower Corvette, developed under the codename "Blue Devil," will be called ZR1. That badge will appear on the January 2008 Detroit show car, and on the production version set to go on sale later next year as a 2009 model. GM has been developing this car for several years, using a supercharged version of the new 6.2-liter small block V-8 used in the 2008 Corvette(pictured). GM also considered such names as Z07 and Super Sport for the ultra-low-volume car. Price will be much higher than the 505-horsepower Z06, and Chevy will continue production of that car when the ZR1 launches.
Chevy first used the ZR1 moniker for a reported eight cars built in the 1971 model year with a 370-horsepower, 350-cubic-inch (5.7-liter) small block V-8. The option cost $1,010, while a 425-horse 454 was $1,221. The '71 ZR1 came with no special bodywork or badging. Chevy revived the name in 1990 for a 32-valve Lotus-designed, Mercury Marine-built 375-horsepower quad-cam V-8. That car had a wider tail to accommodate P315/35ZR17 Goodyears on 11-inch wide wheels and was built through the '95 model year. Badges included a hyphen, as in ZR-1, which doesn't fit GM RPO nomenclature.
GM has never confirmed nor denied rumors that "ZR" stands for "Zora's Racer."
The blown 6.2 also looks like the engine that will power the next Cadillac CTS-v, rather than something based off of GM's new high-feature overhead cam V-8 debuting in '09.

Legend Killer
That it will be. GM should really advertise it that way.....
"The 2009 Corvette ZR-1; also known as, 'The Legend Killer'. It's back, and it's better than ever."
Shit, 650hp in a car that will probably weight about the same as a new ZO6. And the factory blower will make gains SOOOOO easy. The Italian stuff can kiss this car's American ass. :usa: :D
Will it be a 6-figure car though? Is Corvette ready to break that barrier? The original ZR-1 package doubled the price of a new C4. If that will be the case again, we'll be looking at a serious price tag for this bundle of joy.

I bet the guy over at Dodge are mother fucking GM right now. Looks like the new viper being top dog isn't going to last but about another 15 minutes. I still love the viper, its a sexy beast. But this new vette is going to be one level up on the performance side of things.

So, it'll be like a C6 z06 with a 150 kit? I bet that 650hp is either under-rated, or the car is detuned as well.

I can't wait to see how HUGE modded numbers will end up. It WILL deff. have a forged bottom end.
Ooooohhhhh I can't wait, the REAL hp wars are in mid-swing, and it is great. Oh love the name too, seems appropriate.

Only thing is the old ZR1 vettes had overhead cam motors and they were NA. This is a push rod motor with boost still cool tho. Also I alrdy seen the price tag will be 100k at least thats what motortrend says.

Craz1469, that's the funniest thing I've heard all week. Thank you! I'm laughn' my ass off. You know someone on this other forum said the vette will never be able to top the viper becuse of it's displacement capacity, but I've never heard of a motor over 500ci. making 10hp, and that's all your allowed in top fuel. So to say the viper will always be able to one up is wrong. Too bad it will be so damn expensive though. I got the old lady holdn' me at 50k on my next car. Women. :bang:

Awesome. ZR1 was my pic too. Way to go, GM. Thanks for giving us a car to dream about. thanks for giving us a trump card to lay against any other manufacturer in the whole world. :thumb:
Very lightly modded, I bet these cars will take anything in the world. Bone stock, I bet they'll give anything a good run at least.

Whos Zora?
The man who helped turn the Corvette into the performance car it is today, instead of the I6 that it used to be.
I will probably spell it wrong, but it is Zora Arkus Duntov.

Chevrolet would not be where it is today with racing and high perf.
if it wasnt for Zora Arkus Duntov.
im glad that the bottom end is finally forged,
now we should be able to get forged cranks, rods and pistons from GMPP
hope they make the forged bottom end a catalog item like the LSX block
and such.

I love the ZR1 name, hope this name sticks and they don't change it. My only wish for this car is that they do some cosmetic work to clearly differentiate it from the C6 and Z06. The original C4 ZR1 was wider than the regular Corvette, hopefully the ZR1 gets its own nose, updated headlights, and wider rearend with ZR1-only wheels. The most common complaint from current Z06 owners is that their cars do not stand out enough from the base model C6. I agree, since everyone always asked me if my base C6 was a Z06.

They made ZL1 Corvettes also, so that would make for a good name for the next top dog corvette.

thats exactly what I was thinking, because the average eye doesn't know the difference from a Zo6 and Z51... so I would hope that this one stands out as a 100k car somehow and hopefully these wheels that are just for the ZR1 don't flood the market so they stand out a little bit more... seems like every vette I see now has Zo6 rims on it

You probably don't have to worry about that. I'm sure they won't even fit the Z06.

The current 430hp car has trouble hooking up with 285 width tires in the back.
The current 505hp Z06 has trouble hooking up with 325 width tires in the back.
I'm betting that the 600hp Viper still has trouble hooking up with 345 width tires in the back.
I wonder how wide they will be able to go with the 650hp ZR1?

Hell 2.2 KB Cobras are making what this motor is going to be putting down stock. Full exhaust, pulley, tune and maybe a clutch and you will have a stock-ish car that will smoke about 99.99999% of all shit on the road. I hate to say it though, I was disappointed that GM didn't decide to put a forged LS7 with a blower in the ZR-1. A little overkill and the motor would have massively been detuned. But ZR1 is perfect, don't think GM could have picked a better name to remake.

I love the fact that they are going to be using the ZR 1 name for the new exotic vette, very apropriate. But I have to wonder how this thing is going to hold up on a road course with all this power. I'll bet it'll oversteer like crazy...not that its a bad thing I'm all about the stylin points!

the z06 already handles pretty well, the 600hp viper can handle damn well, so I am sure chevy will have no problem mastering that department...

Bracing for all the Ferrari and Lambo fanboys to complain about how Corvette's are dime a dozen, have crappy interiors, and ancient suspension...
All the while they are getting lapped by a car that costs probably less than 1/4 of whats theirs did and still rapes it on and off the track...
WECIV

Well the interior and suspension is cheaper...that is why the car costs so much less.

I read somewhere (notsure where) that chevy was adding some carbon fiber in various areas for weight reduction. The predicted final weight would be an estimated 2800-2900 pounds. Any truth to this?
