Generation IV External Engine - LS7 LS3 MAF sensor tuning

Has anyone seen the MAF in the LS7 and LS3 and other GM cars. No housing, just the sensor. The connector looks the same, pinouts are moved around a little. The question is, has anyone put one of these into a LS2 or other intake system? This would give you a better option of CAI design and they are very cheap. Dealer list is like $87.00 and street price should be about $50-60. PN 15865791, it is 3.66 inches in total length but from the mounting surface to the tip of the sensor (actual part inside your intake duct) is 2.55 inches.

Those are cool! You can install them in any size tube. You will have to build a file based on air flow to signal for that given tube configuration. So you could use it in a low flow smaller tube for a engine that has a lower air flow requirement. Or on a large cubic inch engine you could use a larger tube and build a file for your computer.

In the past mass air meters would reach their limits and "max out" the voltage. Tubing size and the limit of the sensor would require a new mass air meter You can use intall that element in the air flow of your tubing( large or small ) air inlet and tune.

Brian Tompson has one in the air inlet of his Harrup/Eaton Supercharged 428 LSX Based Solstice.

You need to be able to flow them or be ready to build a file for your application. It's not just a matter of plugging it in and tuning. It will require some work to get the file close enough to tune. I would think that there will be files floating around that people have developed in the next 12 months.

What if the base MAF table from a Ls3 was used. I am building the 6.0l L92/L76conversion. I have a 4" aluminum cold air tube with K & N cone filter on the end. I will need everything reprogrammed anyways thats why I decided to look into this option. I would allow me to put the MAF downstream at the filter. Here are the other engines that this is used on:
4.4L LC3
4.6L LH2
2.4L LE5
2.4L LAT
4.2L LL8
6.2L LS3
7.0L LS7

In the ford world we have been using these style meters since 2004/5 and they work great. Great signal quality, and easy to attach to existing intercooling piping.

A friend makes some great CNC housings/adapters for similar meters, I would be interested to see if they would work for the gm units.

The LS3 is a 6.2 but it should be a decent baseline to start. The 4" tube will weaken the signal but not enough to prevent you from tuning it.
I don't know how close you can go to the air filter.

The problem is the crossectional area. 4" is close to what the LS3/7 flow, but not the same. What you need to do is tune with the stock intake on and get the trims right, swap tubes to what you want, and keep playing with the MAF scale until you get back to where you were.

But yes, you can swap them into something other than the stock intakes.

There are some parts out there that will accomodate the new slot style MAF sensors that GM is using.

LPE already makes a 100mm MAF in an aluminum housing using this sensor. They will even give you the baseline #'s to cut and paste directly into HP Tuners. Obviously it will take tweaking, but it will get you close..

I'm running a VMP flange on a 3" tube with the LS7 electronics on my turbocharged AWD TBSS. I had to change the pinout on the LPE supplied MAF connector adapter, but other than that, it was an easy swap (calibrated very nicely as well). I run 7 psi on the street, and 11 psi at the track, and the beautiful part about "MAF tuning" is that I don't touch the tune......just add 100 octane for the "hi-boost".

I'd like to do this cartridge style maf on my Trans Am but I'm not sure if I could gain anything?I have a 427 that I am running a 85mm ZO6 maf on right now and I think I have a restriction there.The problem is that the airlid coming in is no bigger than 85mm either so what would I gain.......probably nothing?!Traver

I have also done this setup on my LS1 RX7 it is at the tuner now will have some HP numbers later this week.

I will let you know how it all works. I don’t see a problem with it now, if you would like I'm going to start making a better version of my intake with the LS7 MAF if you are interested.

Does anyone need a maf cartridge 15865791 yet? Thought I was getting a 85mm Z06 maf and ended up with this. I paid $50 shipped I will sell for $40 shipped.

Yeah these are widely used..Guys over on HPTuners have been discussing it..especially with F.I. apps...I have one just for a F-body with a dead IAT side so that the seperate IAT can still be used for sale...I can also get a bracket that can be used to mount the MAF to any CAI along with the harness..I plan on using the LS3/LS7 MAF on my build with a 100mm CAI...
