Automotive News, Media & Press - Consumer Reports says Toyota reliability slips
OctaneZ28

Consumer reports rates two Toyota models below average in reliability:
The Toyota Camry V6 and the Toyota Tundra V8 4WD.
Ratings based on owner feedback.
"Consumer Reports will no longer recommend any new or redesigned Toyota-built models without reliability data on a specific design," the publication said in a statement. "Previously, new and redesigned models were recommended because of the automaker's excellent track record."
So...
"The best car" and "The truck that's changing it all" aren't so great afterall.
Gee, I coulda told you that a year ago.

Of course you know that now you will have ALL of the ones that swear a blood oath allegiance to the Nippon Giant (and Japan) coming on here claiming CR is pure bullshit.
Funny how when CR is in their favor, it's the greatest thing since the wheel!! :rotflmao:

CR is bullshit. But it's great that now the tides have turned and we'll have the guys who used to swear by the Toyota-humping publication telling us they never trusted CR. This ought to be very interesting.

I'm convinced that CR rates their cars by the amount of carbon emissions they put out, regardless of what they say.
I've never seen anything but BS from their auto reviews. However, I would use them to research a vaccuum cleaner....

No, we're mad that people think like you. No Japanese company is "dominating the car market". GM sells more cars, has more nameplates at the top of reliability lists, and wins just about every performance battle vs. Toyota.
So we have nothing to be mad about except that despite the above mentioned facts, many people still feel that they have grounds to say "Toyota is winning".

Actually GM and Ford lost the car market share in the early 90's. The Ford Taurus was the last leading car for N. America. The Honda Accord and Camary have sold leaps and bounds over any attended market that the US automakers have targeted. We can also look at the sub compacts, where the GM and Ford are far behind in sales.
Im not anti anything. I go out and purchase what I feel is right for me. For you to insist that Toyota isnt doing anything right, is completely moronic and naive. There's a reason why Toyota has surpassed GM as the number one automaker. The reasons in which you provide are not coherent enough to change anyones mind. I wont exactly say "Toyota is winning" but I will respect the fact that they have accomplished something that hasnt been done in US history.

GM is still the #1 auto maker in the US.
The were the #1 automaker in the world in the 2nd and 3rd 1/4 this year also I believe, 2nd quarter for sure.
And they are mostly American by what standards? All of their profits go overseas- contributing to Japans GNP.
Most of their parts and components are made overseas.
And the majority of its cars are produced outside the US.

All of the profits, do not go overseas. If this were the case, the American economy would be suffering instead of profiting from Toyota. A Toyota dealership is independent from Toyota in itself.
What about SBC, Dell and other US companies that outsource India and China for labor? Or that GM builds its trucks in Canada and Mexico. But its not ok for Toyota to provide plants and help thousands and thousands of Americans supply their family with food and shelter.
What difference does it make where the car is built? GM and Ford both have plants in other countries as well.

I work for toyota. CR is full of crap. Almost every new model that comes out on ANY product line is going to have problems that need to be worked out. I think they may just be back stepping a bit because Toyota is usually really good about working out the problems before releasing the vehicle into the public market. I would think the only thing CR is basing their claim on is the fact that the earlier released Tundras were breaking Cams......and we havnt even heard anything about that for months now. I think the worst of that has past. I have no clue why they would bash a camry......there is nothing wrong with them. I stand beside toyota on their dependability and thier workmanship. They are very easy and straitforward to work on too. Dont get me wrong.....im a GM guy all the way....but i know good quality when i see it.

It was based off of data collected from people who OWN the vehicles, not making up data as they see fit.
Although the part about not recommending cars is their own opinion, but based off of collected data. I am not defending them, I think they are worthless. But they always backed Toyota, Honda, etc for years- and now that they dont the import crowd thinks they are worthless. Ironic.

Are you in the import crowd? How would you know they think honda and toyota are worthless? Personally I think the supra and NSX are overrated but nice cars. Do you play the banjo by any chance?

Learn to read. I said "I think they are worthless", meaning CR.
Even if I did play the Banjo, wouldnt that be a sad statement for you? That would mean that you have less reading comprehension than a toothless hillbilly.
Fact is when CR was raving about Toyota the import crowd raved about them, now they are full of shit? I guess all the owners that were surveyed who reported problems are full of shit also.

Great, but we are talking about automobiles here, NOT "other consumables". Now you sound like that "genius" 25/45psi, who seems to think that since Japan/Asia own ALL electronics industries (which we used to have), we should just willingly hand over our whole auto industry lock, stock and barrel. Many of you "importees" seem hellbent on helping them accomplish this, and will not rest easy until your precious TOY/Japan, Inc. are ALL one can buy. Sounds like some "great logic" to me. :eyes: :eyes:
At least right now we can still buy a domestic nameplate with mostly U.S. sourced/owned/supplied/manufactured content. If all of you import fanboys have your way this will not hold true in the future. Have fun paying $75K for your f'inf Camry, or $150K for your new Poopra.
I suppose your "perfect" TOYota "helps thousands and thousands of Americans supply their familes with food and shelter" out of the benevolence/kindness of their blessed little hearts, right?? Never mind that they profit 10x over from having their transplants here, instead of Kyoto. But of course they don't miss a beat in selling/marketing your statement to the sheeple/lemming public, while leaving out the REAL motivation.

Look at what i found on the Motor Trend website. The damn tundra is beginning to fall apart, Toyota should stick to cars:
"Toyota's full-size Tundra pickup has hit yet another speed bump, this time in the form of a torque-converter problem, reports Automotive News. According to numerous complaints, the torque converter in the six-speed gearbox found in Tundras equipped with the 5.7-liter V-8 engine sometimes fails to disengage during shifts. The problem generally manifests itself merely as a vibration similar in effect to driving on the rumble strips found on the side of many roads, but can result in the truck refusing to shift.
Though reports of the problem are sporadic, 5.7-liter models make up 70 percent of the roughly 135,000 Tundras that have been sold, so almost 95,000 trucks may potentially be affected. Prior to the problem being identified by Toyota, dealers would replace entire transmissions to fix it, though now it's likely that only the torque converter will be replaced.
Additionally, reports are beginning to circulate around the Internet of tailgates coming apart after loading motorcycles, ATVs, snowmobiles, and the like over the tailgate and into the bed -- which is typical use for full-size trucks such as the Tundra.
The Tundra already has been hit with a highly publicized faulty camshaft problem, though one that was limited to just a few hundred vehicles, and Consumer Reports labeled the 4x4 model as "below average" in projected reliability -- a considerable black eye for an automaker long considered the publication's darling. It remains to be seen just how much bad news the new truck can withstand before the damage begins to show up in the sales figures."

Just wanted to note that I never said anything about this. Just that Toyota is not "winning".

Where did I say "Toyota isn't doing anything right"?!
They're doing everything right. All I said was that they are not "winning".
I don't disagree with you on anything but your claim that Toyota is number one. That's not a fact.

Don't worry about it. Those are the same people that think pushrods suck. Just wait till they have to get a tensioner, 4 idlers, and a belt. Add that to the 500 dollars of labour to change out their timing system while you go buy a 18 dollar timing set and pop it in.
:gtfo:
BTW the longest service interval for a belt driven system is 105K miles going to the Suby WRX. LS1 can go way past that with their primative chain driven system.
Guess I am racist because I know a thing or two about cars yet I see disadvantages to imports. Sigh.
BTW I am use 45PSI's Tundra is nearing it's service interval. Good thing he isn't doing any serious racing.
[edit] Toyota says 60K for all cars 2004 and up. Hope you like paying Koyo.
