Small Block & Big Block Chevy Specific - 305 CID engine help.

Hi, I'm a guy who's trying to get into american motors and I'm wondering, what would the most efficient way to get a 305 CID to get around 300 RWHP or 350 crank horsepower (this will be a street car)? Does anyone know any good brands to buy from, or how much parts will cost? How much do 305 CID motors go for in general? Finally, what is the hp/tq output for a stock 305 CID? The reason I'm wondering about this engine is cause it's the smallest displacement and I figure it would be the cheapest since I'm just trying to experiment for now.
Please try not to flame me too bad if this is considered a stupid thread.
EDIT: I've searched, and I already know the 305 isn't the best platform to start on, but I want a motor that can rev decently and also have decent gas mileage as well, that has around 300 RWHP or so. I hear people talking about "Head/Cam/Intake", but which ones would be best suited for my needs?

trickflow, holley, dart, comp. the biggest downer is the bore. you cant put really good heads on it because the valves would be shrouded. id go with the best heads possible, a holley stealth ram, and a cam to match both.

I've done a lot of research about this as well, and everyone i've asked has told me to go with 350 vortec heads as they are a good CC combustion chamber for the engine and will flow well for a 305. Shouldn't need much more than .5 lift. Also remember that a big cam for a 305 isn't the same as a big cam for a bigger engine.

Don't waste your time. If you're worried about fuel economy this isn't the correct section for you. Just get a 350. You can find them super cheap pretty much every where and the aftermarket for them is absolutely humongous. You may think that you want a 305, but after you put money into it you'll realize what a waste it was when you compare it to doing the same sort of things to a 350.

Here we go again....
Yea, it isnt the best choice, it can make 350 fwhp, as stated with vortec heads, but with the same mileage and 65 more HP the 350 would be a wiser choice. But its your money.

(not trying to hijack thread but..) while I know and seems like guy who started this thread knows, 350 is better.. but if you have a 305 block already.. it will be cheaper to just put heads/cam on it to get mild power.. especially for someone like me who simply doesn't have the mechanical background to do his or her own work getting a whole engine swap is expensive. Not trying to be rude but if someone asks for advice on a specific platform don't be a dick if it's not the best platform as it could be the only one they can work with for the time being.

I understand, i am not trying to be a dick but the 305 thing is beat to death ya know, if i was being a ass i woulda been name calling. I happen to pick up 350 blocks for nothing,i know i am not alone so i just assume if you look you will find that extra 45 cubic inches which happens to be cheaper to build ya know?

wasn't meant at you zones89rs... thirdgen.org has a good bit of fast 305's lurking around it. I personally will probably build up the 305 keep it like that while i save for a little M or world block and go with something nice and big.
