First AMG out-AMG'd itself with the CLK63 Black Series. Next up is a car likely to make you forget that Mercedes-McLaren SLR, the SL65 AMG Black Series. Power from the SL65 AMG's twin-turbo 6.0-liter V-12 will be increased well past that car's 604 horsepower, and significantly past 650 horses, while maintaining the 738 pound-feet (1,000 KW) of the "quotidian" SL65 AMG. The SL Black Series gets new, mostly carbon-fiber bodywork and a fixed roof, which helps cut bodyweight. The Black Series is expected to shed more than 500 pounds versus the SL65. Only the rear quarter-panels remain rendered in steel. The SL's new grille is more squat on the Black Series, and the hood is apparently exempt from new European pedestrian safety laws, thanks to very low volume production. The SL65 Black Series is scheduled to make its debut at the German Grand Prix in July.

It just so happens that I'll be getting my hands on one (brand new blk/blk) for about a month this coming May! Long story how I worked this out...

The AMG SL-65 is an awesome car; it's a bi-turbo V-12 that makes 604 horse and 738 torque. BTW-That's "stock" for those who don't know.

I believe the sticker is $209,000, but that may vary depending on the interior and exterior options ordered by the customer; and they're all convertables (retractable hard tops).

For the new one I'll be driving, I'm not sure what the actual sticker was. I just know that it's a 2008 model year "black on black" SL-65, and that the owner paid "just" under $180,000 OTD.

If you're gonna ask that, you should also ask why anyone would piss away 200K on a Ferrari or Lambo? Why would anyone fork out 65K for a new Z06 when you can drop 10k into a Honda and have a fast-ass car.

Because that car is really worthy of the price. The attention to detail, the rediculous power, a luxury. There are faster cars out there, to be sure. But These cars arent just about speed.

When you get into the $100K+ price range, it isnt all about speed: its about prestige, an IMAGE. These sort of cars are ART as much as car.

Like it or not, that SL65 Black is a bad-ass vehicle. If i was willing/able to fork out $200k on a car, that is a worthy car.

65k is a far cry from 200k+

I just find it wildly wasteful.

American cars are expensive but for the most part not ridiculously so.

I'm not ashamed to admit that the sl65 amg has been my dream car for some time now. i'd take it over the z06. though the z06 is more a performer than the amg, the benz makes up for it in refinement and prestige as mystic said. one day...one day.

Don't get me wrong if I had money I would probably get a z06 or ZR1 but I think it would be sick to have something like the ford GT. personally I wouldn't get the benz, its not my cup of tea. its all based on the individual's preference, and like already stated it is a status symbol kind of thing. not everyone is car enthusiasts like we are so where we see a bad ass Z06 the average person just sees another corvette, but they know mercedes stands for luxury, but we may see it as just another mercedes. personal preference is the point I guess I'm trying to et across here. haha.

I've never been a huge fan of MB cars. Although, I have alwas been envious of their AMG power plants.
