Drag Racing Tech - exhaust at the track. open headers?
what will give you the best gains in exahust at the track. i run extensions at the end of the headers, i also do this to save weight. :drive:

I've tried open headers (O2's got really screwy) and now my custom true duals (no X or H pipe)(8" x 3" pipe to 3" Dynomax billet mufflet to a short 3" turn-down). Open headers possibly a little better, but the true duals make the O2's happy :D
I did ask one of our sponsors how much I would loose by using true duals over X or H pipes. He stated not much poss 3-5 hp. Could never get the X pipe to work with the DS loop.

He stated that he runs extensions off of the headers. That will fix the O2 problems. Open headers can give you gains at the track...especially if you only operate the engine at higher RPMS (open headers can kill some low end power but that means nothing to those who's engines never see those low RPMS at the track.)

Does open headers change the car's tune after dumping the catback or dual setup?

My friend ran open headers at the track and he lost alot of power. KR etc. was the effect

Did your friend use extensions? Did he determine for sure that his KR was real and not false knock?
Don't blame the fact that he was running open headers. There's something else afoot.

No extensions. It was false knock though. We put on the Mac Y-Pipe and no more probs...The car wouldnt pull for shit though. These LS1's like some backpressure. Thats what I learned

FWIW, my car made 6 more RWHP with a good Y-pipe / cutout than it did with open headers. KR was not an issue, it's disabled in my PCM.
My Y- is dual 3's going to a Flowmaster collector / 3.5" out, to a 3.5" cutout (and then it necks down to go over the axle with a standard 3" pipe).
Of course, I'm still hauling the heavy muffler out back. ;)
