DEARBORN, Michigan — The 540-horsepower 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR arrives in showrooms this spring with a $79,995 price tag, including destination and gas-guzzler tax, said Ford Motor Company on Tuesday.

The Dearborn automaker's most powerful Mustang ever is available only at "select" Ford dealerships and will have a production run of 1,000 cars for 2008 and approximately 700 additional units in 2009. The GT500KR will hit showroom floors at the end of May.

The highly anticipated muscle car based on the GT500 is equipped with a 5.4-liter supercharged V8 that is enhanced with a Ford Racing Power Upgrade Pack, revised engine calibration and a freer-flowing exhaust. It churns out 540 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to a Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission.

Ford Spokesman Said Deep told Inside Line that the "King of the Road" muscle car has just three options: a Shaker 1000 stereo, a navigation system and Sirius Satellite Radio.

Ford noted in its press material about the car on Tuesday that fuel economy numbers are still a question mark. "Testing in progress," the automaker noted in its specifications package on the GT500KR.

What this means to you: You'll pay a substantial price for this muscle car — and there is some concern that dealers may add a premium as well. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent

The only problem with that car aside from the price is that it begins with GT and ends in R.

I like it, but not enough that if i had the money to spend 80K on it. Then throw on the added $20K mark up from the dealers. I honestly think the best bang for the buck mustang was the 03-04 SVT Cobras, ever since they added the Shelby names to the mustangs its made the price to outrageous. Then whenever Carroll goes into his eternal sleep the price is just going to jump some more.

Just like the originals this car is an investment and a rarity for those who can afford it.

That is a fucking joke. 80k for that. Fuck me. Excellent car...for 40k.I agree that it is A LOT of money.
But do keep in mind that back in 1968 they were saying that exact same thing about the $6k GT500KRs of the day...they're selling for $200k+ in some cases now. ;)
Back in 1966 there were brand new 427 Cobras sitting on showroom floors with $8k sticker prices on them...worth millions today.
I love the man and he has beaten the odds time and again but Carroll Shelby is NOT going to live forever. ;)

Will it happen again?
Is it worth buying a car like this and driving it very little/not at all, keeping it in a pristine, climate controlled state of hibernation for 40+ years?

I can't answer that but I can tell ya this, I won't be doing that LOL.

I honestly think the best bang for the buck mustang was the 03-04 SVT CobrasI agree, those really were THE bargains of the bunch, fast in stock trim, EASILY (and relatively cheaply) modifiable, not the lightest but certainly lighter than the latest Mustang offerings and just all around great cars.

That may be pricey, but DAMN that car looks hot. I'd drive it any day of the week (or all 7...:D). The only thing I'd change looks-wise (including color) would be that I'd drop the wheels down an inch in size. Those are just massive and look a bit awkward to me.

Actually there's just so many variations one can do on the same platform & this one looks too much like all the rest.
For that kinda money in the market as of today it would have to run the quarter mile in under "11.50 seconds at over 125 MPH or it would be considered a turkey . So in summation , it neither looks the part nor does it run like it is worth that kind of money . Put one on the dyno then we'll see where it stands .

Damn that is sexy. Ford makes some bad ass cars, but they are just way too pricey, and overweight. Thats a 55k car maximum...

I am sorry guys but looks wise between the c6z06 and this is no contest. That is one amazing mustang.... flame suite on.

This a pure cash-in on rich baby boomers with lots of money to spend on toys. People sure eat this nostalgic crap up. In the end its still a Mustang and when you go to the store some kid or lady will say "Hey I have a Mustang too!"

But you have to take into account when buying a car like this, your not buying the car your buying the name. If your buying the car the Mustang your going to pay in the 20s and get a V6, here your paying an assload of money but your getting a GT500. Which nowadays doesn't mean much, since the people that usually know what a GT500 is have watched the remake of Gone in 60 Seconds. Same for the Corvette when you pay $80K for one your not getting just a Corvette, your going home in a Z06.

Just so everyone knows, the 725 horse version runs on par with a "stock" Z06 with a 100k mile factory warranty. The Ford Super Snake also has a 100k feature, not the warranty (it doesn't come with one), but rather the price tag.

I remember looking at a 2000 Cobra R and it had a sticker of $89,995 at the stealership in Colorado Springs. It was a cool ass car, except for the ridiculous wing on the back, but it wasn't 90k worth of cool. Someday they may get thier money back but damn.

The 725hp Super Snake may run on par with the Z06, but your paying a shitload of money for NO warranty. Check out the Road and Track Review, says it there they can up the horsepwer to 725HP but your losing your warranty. Either way whats the point your going to run with a "stock" Z06, and get ass raped by the ZR1.

I know!:chug:

I thought my mockery of Ford's Super Snake was clear in my post.

That and the King of the Road version with "540 horse" (running on par with a stock LS3) are both pathetic examples of Ford performance.
