Stereo & Electronics - Anybody else get sick of their subs after a few years and take them out?

I have.
Up until about a month ago I have had 2 Polk GNX124 12"s run off a RF power 550s amp bumping in the trunk. I built a monster custom box for my convertible trunk that weighed in the range of 125lbs or more when carpeted, loaded with the subs and amp. Had them in my old Firebird and transferred them into the TA when I bought it. I got them when I was 17 years old and im now 23. They are fun but I am just sick of the headaches and "ghetto-ness" now. I find that I dont play my music nearly as loud as i used to and they've been sitting in my garage for the past month. At first I missed being able to turn it up and thump down the block, but that feeling has faded.
Am I turning into an old man at age 23? This cant be happening?
Anybody else run subs in their ride for a few years then "grow out of them"?
I think if I ever did it again id get maybe a small 10" just for some filler sound. But i dont know if i even need that...
Im gonna sell or trade my setup if anyone is interested pm me. Its ready to drop into any convertible and pound all night. Too much for me anymore i guess...:bang:

every since i turned 14 i was all about systems. i had a system bought and stored away even before i got my first car when i was 15. I had slowly upgraded amp and sub over and over again. When I sold my first car at 17, the system went with it. I bought my camaro after that and missed the bass after about 6 months. anyways, i say the love for sound will always be there for u and after not having a system for while you will want it back.

I hope to never lose the taste for loud ass music. I don't think i'll ever not have a system, but in the future im sure my taste will migrate from SPL to SQ...

i'll NEVER get sick of having a good sound system in my vehicle, although the definition of "good" has definitely changed over the years.
when i got my first car, i only upgraded to some 6x9's in the rear deck.
in my next car, i had a couple different pairs of 12" subs, and even four 10" subs at one time.
the car after that, i had a couple different pairs of 12" subs, then a single 12" sub, then a pair of 10" subs.
now that i have my camaro, i have a single 10" sub
i've really just mainly gone from wanting a system that was loud, to wanting one that actually sounds good, but can still get much louder than the stock system to overcome the exhaust & wind noise.

I'll never get rid of a subwoofer. But I'm running a single 12" now and doubt I'll ever want anything more in a car. I used to be for dual 12"s at the very least, if not 15"s. I still play my system pretty loud and I can't see that stopping until I'm past 50 (or going deaf because of it).

I never had them (in ANY car I've ever owned), so I will never miss them.
The lighter, simpler, and cleaner/out of site (so the same 'Gs' you attract with your thumpers do not break into MY car and cost me >$1000.00 out of pocket!! ) the BETTER!
Now granted, I'm old enough to be a grandpa to most of you, but even when I was younger I NEVER got the fascination with sounding ghettopimpyG going down the street. I guess it goes along with not liking blingpimpyG chrome wheels as well.
But then again the stuff I listen to (even loud) is not condusive to G rapper thumping bass, so the mids and highs are MUCH more important to me anyway.

I was beginning to think I posted this in the wrong section. haha. Im sure most people in here are PRO giant subwoofers. For me the fascination came from competitions with my neighbors and people in town. When I was younger i knew i didnt have the money to compete on speed or 1/4mi terms, but at least i had enough scratch to compete on subwoofer terms. When the guy down the block is hitting harder then you, you want to build it bigger and badder. I guess i just dont care about the sound anymore and im starting to care more about speed/power.

the type of music listened to doesn't matter, you could listen to classical music and it would sound better......if the music you listen to has any frequencies below 120Hz or so (which is almost ALL music), it will definitely sound better with a subwoofer. not only because the smaller midrange speakers are not as efficient at playing low frequencies, but because once you have a subwoofer, you can set your crossover to filter out the frequencies on your mids/highs that they can't play efficiently, and route them to the sub. this lets the power you are pushing to each speaker be used as efficiently as possible, and keeps your midrange from distorting as much because they are no longer trying to play those really low bass frequencies.
and it doesn't even have to be a huge, heavy subwoofer, either. you could put a 6.5" or 8" Bazooka amplified bass tube in there, those things are light as hell. the 6.5" version is 12lbs, and the 8" version is only 14lbs.
just because someone has a nice system in a car, doesn't make them "ghetto", it just means they like their music to sound better (and louder) than the shitty stock system. even though i have a system in my car, i almost never listen to rap in it (even though i do listen to rap, among many other types of music).
i can understand if you were making the choice not to put it in there for weight reasons.....hell, people buy parts for their car that cost hundreds of dollars in order to save 15 - 20 pounds.....but that doesn't sound like the main motivation for you based on your statements. it sounds to me like you have some weird stereotype-based aversion to wanting a subwoofer or audio system. don't take it personally if i'm wrong, i'm just saying that's how it sounds to me.....
and there are many people that do "stealth" system installs in their cars, and have spent thousands of dollars on their upgraded equipment. just because you have a system, doesn't automatically mean it's going to be visible to someone outside looking in....

Sorry if I sounded like what you've stated above.
YES, I DO know everything would sound better with more/cleaner lows! I just can't stand EVERY 'ghetto G' around here who pulls up at a stoplight and BLASTS his crappy sounding crap on a CRAPPY subwoofer system.
BTW; it's NOT a 'stereotype' if it happens more often than not (by OBSERVATION), and they act like they are PROUD to be thugs/hardcore criminals/ex-cons, or even admire those who are just that.
I also know about the 'stealth' systems, and would not mind having one IF, and ONLY IF it could be done VERY LOW weight!!
See, you forgot the weight of the AMPS to power said subs in your above discourse.
Actually you are wrong about one thing at least; I DO care about weight/simplicity, otherwise I would NOT have ordered, brand new a 1SC stripper (don't even have a rear window defroster!!), and would have pimped it out with EVERY option in the book!
Unlike everyone else, I'd rather take off weight than even add power.

actually, no i didn't....those are the weights of the amplified bazooka tubes, with the amp built into the unit :thumb:
got them directly from the pdf file from the SAS (Bazooka) site that contains all the specs on their sub systems

:
Yeah man, you re growing, but from the sound of your words in the post, the folks who raised you did a good job! Welcome to the more subtle world of the somewhat mature.
Don't be surprised if you want to put them back in though (say around 32).
Take them out again around 36.
Put'em in around 45 take them out at 46.
At 52 plan on turning the entire rag-top into a sub.
And finally at 60, go looking for the same system the alien ship used in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind".
Not sure what happens after that.
I say, keep'em for awhile, they are part of your history.

I can tell you I was in to the sub thing when I was 19-23 or so. Late 20's, didn't mind or think too much about it, think I had an 8" in the back. Now at 36, I haven't given much thought to it other than just replacing the stock speakers with upgrades one day. I'm sure it would be different if I weren't married with two kids and a house.

Yep, subs was a high school thing for me and grew completely out of it by age 20 or so. Now I'm just into quality tunes. Component systems usually take care of those needs. My GM truck came with a bose component system and sounds perfect to my ears.

I also use to be one of those kids who would have 2 12's kicking in the trunk.. Now at 25 I watch the high schoolers drive by with their trunk rattling and annoying 150db bass and all I can do is shake my head... Im good with 1 10" in a stealth box and a 300w amp!

I will only own a 10" sub, it puts out enough bass for me. I have one in my jeep and 1 in my camaro. I only turn up the radio when cruising down the interstate with the wind blowing.

I've never really liked too much beat myself. My friends have had it in their cars. It always attracted the wrong attention in my opinion. Gotta worry bout your shit getting jacked to cops pulling you over for bumping too loud and then they try to get you for some other shit. I think replacing the stock equipment is all I need, I wish I could say the same for my car. My .02

i used to have two 15's in the back, it was fun, would shake pictures off of neighbor's houses lol
but then i bought some nitrous, had to get rid of something cuss there was to much weight, ditches the speakers.... then a year later got rid of the nitrous and went turbo...... i want speakers again, but maybe just a stealth will be fine for me, like all the other guys have said it was a highschool thing, now it's about the quailty

I ditched mine and sold them to an 18 year old. Although - RMorgan77 has a great point regarding the future. Maybe its best to put them in a storage space - so the midlife crisis will be cheaper?
Pros for getting rid of subs:
- More trunk room for the transportation of beer by drivers of legal age.
- Drivers of a legal age are able to transport glass beer bottles without fear of them breaking.
- Better to be around people of a legal age, who are impressed by you being able to transport them and their beer and not about the amount of pain you can inflict upon their ears.
- The vibrations are hell on the hemorrhoids. (If you don't have them yet... you will.)

nothing like clean undistorted loud ass music.........cars and music go hand in hand...i never been a base freak....but when that song comes on that is just right i blast my shit loud.... 1000 watts rms you can hear the whole song blocks away.....cars and system just go together......i love mys system and i dont care about how much weight it adds...just make sure you have a small eq...if you dont your missing on so much of the experience...
if you dont have any kind of bass in your car it sucks..its like listening to guns and roses with no slash in it......., you can have a nice system without copromising all your space....my pops is in his 50's and he still bumps his shit...no matter what it is, country, rap, rock, salsa..and he doesnt give a fuck thats how i plan on being.....no such thing as loosing your hearing...its just your system not being loud enough

I build a custom box and system in HS. It was great until I graduated, then I realized I could sell it for $100 more than I had in it to a Sophmore in HS.
I sold it and used the money towards my first semester of college.
I had my fill, and I've never wanted a system again.

I had two 12 inch subs and enjoyed the thump, it did get old. Also most my music isn't of the thump genre. Long story short had subs, got stolen, haven't missed them. Cars lighter and hasn't been broken into since.

I used to have 3 - 12"s in my riviera. When I bought my first camaro it went with it and I never looked back. Heck my ranger and my Trans am both have the stock tape players in them and I haven't even cared to even have c.d.'s anymore. 6 presets on the stock radio are good enough for me now.
small sub and good sound quality.
My gto needs a small sub, but the trunk is so small to begin with.
The f-car only has a sub, due to the stealth box, works perfect in that unused part of the hatch

Try a Pioneer shallow mount 10" or 12" they both need less than a Cu. Ft.

nope, never. the thing to keep in mind is moderation and what is needed to perform at your intended level of sound quality.
A pair of 6.5 w/tweets, a single 10, and a decent sized amp sound very good. It bothers me a bit that I have to add that weight to the car, but the enjoyment that comes from having comparatively quality sound is worth the trade off in my opinion. For most people, their car is NOT a dedicated race car.

ive had one other real nice system in a toyota pickup about four years ago and im now working on one for the camaro.
imho, a nice stereo that sounds exceptional makes you grin everytime you get into the car. id always look forward to a drive in the truck just to think and pass the time listening to music. im doing exactly what he prescribes above for stereo components.:chug:

In my first car, a 86 Camaro, I had a single 10". Eventually I replaced that with a pair of 12s, and it wasn't a custom box. I usually kept it on the ledge behind the rear seat, and when I wanted the ttops off I would fold the seat down and move the box. So if you had more than two people in the car and wanted the tops off, you were screwed.:jest: Went to a 83 Z28, got a box that fit in the back, took care of the ttops problem. When I sold that car, the stereo went with it. I decided I didn't want the cost to change the box again to fit the 94, and at that point all I wanted to do is go fast, and I still just want to go fast. 94 z28 will never have a stereo. If I ever have the funds the Silverado might get a single 10. They were Cerwin Vega comps too, I liked them a lot, but I guess I decided what my priorities are, I haven't even replaced the dead passenger door speaker.
Also on the theft issue, my friend had his 05 Lancer broken into, someone obviously knew he had a system. Next morning his sub/amp were missing from the trunk, and his ipod and smart phone were gone. Sucks, but someone has been steeling systems around town, so they are probably looking out for them. I imagine that's the same scenario everywhere.

I used have a station wagon and loved to bump the hell outta my music. Then I bought my fbody kept with the stock bose system for the longest time. Put my old twelve in it, bumped it blew it and left it. After a while I dropped another sub in. And thats where I now sit. A single 12" and I want to get rid of it now. I turn the sub pretty much all the way down when I listen to music now. The bass just gives me a headache now.

I don't think i will get a system on my next car just because i don't really listen to music anymore, I find myself listening to sports talk 610 more than anything, very rarley do i listen to music.
But if i do end up getting a system just throw a base tube in the back of the hatch and be done with it, real light and plenty of bass.

I got dual 15s when i first started driving and had them in my chevy truck for about 6 months and then when i got a camaro i had them in there for about a month and got sick of them and pulled them out... I am now looking into getting a stealth box for a single 10 or 12... i don't want a lot of bump, just a good bass line that i can hear, not the 20 cars around me can hear like my 15s were
