So I'm guessing that's really a 455... with 400 written on the air filter? Or does he have that 400 done up pretty dam good.

nah with a good 400 you can get 500HP, I have seen a 400 with a Butler stroker kit hit like 650hp
A 455 on the other hand will make that no problem, but those are some extreme engines

Do you know anything about the engine? What heads, hoe big of a cam?
I have a 68 Firebird 400 that I am going to rebuild the motor soon, Im not sure what kind of head make good numbers on those motors and what other parts to stay away from. Id appreciate the help. Thanks!

A 400, with a stroker kit, is a 455!!!
But I agree on the 400's being able to make 500hp, hell I have one with stock low compression heads that puts down power better then my LS1.

wrong newbcakes
a 455 and a 400 are two different blocks, yes they have similar external dimensions, and have some interchangeable parts, but a stroked 400 usually has about 467 cubes, not 455

I'm far from a Newb... I've built a few Pontiacs in my day....
The 400 is a 4.120" Bore X 3.75" Stroke...
The 455 is a 4.150" Bore X 4.21" Stroke...
That would make a 400, with a .03 over bore, and a 4.21" stroker crank...
EXACTLY the same as as a 455.
Anyways... no point fighting over 10 cubic inches. The point is a stroker 400 is not a 400, and is more like a 455, it's a little harder to get power and torque out of the 400's...
