Small Block & Big Block Chevy Specific - 3rd Gen TPI - Need to Bump Up Idle

my 87 IROC idles at around 750rpms....it is stored a lot, and I thought I had bad gas - it kept stalling out when I would come to a stop.

I threw some cleaner in there, and its acting better BUT she will still randomly stall out because it wont catch itself fast enough


When I start the car in the morning, she puffs a little bit of white smoke...has done that for years since the seals are drying out (only 49k original miles)

but once shes running, no smoke.


could something be gumed up? Keep trying cleaners?

But I still think the idle needs to be up closer to 800-950 rpms?

idle could be 550 or 600 rpm in gear, check timing first.

out of gear she idles at 750 (manual car)

how could the timing be off?

possible clogged injector? any good way to check for that?

I got the same problem with the smoke but I put those oils that you use them for a high milege engine to remove the smoke and it works

those are all synthetic aren't they?

isn't it a "no no" to switch a regular oil motor to a full synthetic?

any idea why shes stalling all the time?

Fuel Pump?
Fuel filter is about 8 years old
cat clogged up?
O2 sensor?

Well it wasnt a synethetic oil it was something thicker than that and you need to change the fuel filter and change the cat because my Z28 was stalling before two weeks and when I toke it to the garage he told me I changed the fuel filter and played with the timing a lil bit

I think it might be the IAC sticking (seems to be a common problem)

I also want to clean the EGR vavle, since that can cause the same problems...but I can't find it on the car??

Here is so much 1980's emissions crap I can't see it...can anybody point me in the right direction?

If you have the stock camshaft, it should idle all day long at 650-700 rpms. If it wont, you have a problem, as you've noticed. The IAC is underneath the throttle body. The EGR valve is the big round thing under the middle of the plenum.

A bad injector is one culprit. My dad had one when he first got his car. It would stall out when you stopped, and when you put the car in gear (his was an automatic).
