Cheap insurance to not burn up your stock wiring. I'd NEVER recommend installing an HID kit without one. As cheap as they cost extra there's really no reason not to have one. HID's may draw less power once they're on than halogens but they still draw a great deal of current when the ballasts initially fire up.

So you will be willing to pay for his repairs when it happens to him? haha. Just cause it doesn't happen to one person doesn't mean it won't happen to another. I've seen countless cars fry up wiring for using higher wattage halogens. It's no different other than the fact that HID's aren't pulling that current all the time. It's one thing to do it to your car that's fine it's another to tell someone else it's okay just because it didn't happen to your car. And for usually around 12 bucks, it's better to be on the safe side than to be a cheap ass. For me I typically prefer to make the appropriate upgrade if I know for a fact I'll be pulling more power than the original part did.

Only time I'd ever recommend not using a relay harness is if you're putting HID's in a car that has them optional in other trim levels. For example putting them into a WRX. A WRX STI has HID's standard while the WRX does not but the WRX still has the upgraded wiring to handle the HID kit so it would be fine running them without a relay in that instance.

i dont recall anywhere in what i wrote that recommended him not to use them. i was speaking from my personal experience. i was stating that i dont and wont be using them and havent had any issue. i dont wear saftey goggles or gloves while working on my car even though i might get something in my eyes or get my hands dirty. i guess i live dangerously. now dont you go thinking that im recommending you or him not to wear goggles or gloves on account that i dont, i dont want to be responsible for any medical bills.
