Best sounding and most unique muffler I've ever heard on an LT1 was a single 3" in/out 12" long Borla XR1. I had Long Tubes, Mufflex Y pipe, intermediate over the axle, the XR1 in the place where the stock muffler went but with the exit dumped/turned to the ground. There was some resonance at certain RPM's going down the freeway but when you pressed the gas pedal to the floor, it was a consistent eargasm.

Another GMMG vote. I love it, it has a very intimidating sound. I will admit it was nice without the headers but not great. The tone the headers gave really made the car sound pissed off.

There's really no spot where they're supposed to go. You can put them anywhere you want. But, for the best sound quality, I'd put it ride before the rear axle. All the ones I've heard like that sound pretty good, and you probably won't go completely deaf when getting on it. Mine was right where the Y-pipe merged into the single I-pipe, right under the passenger seat. It was louder than hell, and sounded like a Nascar basically when I got on it. But, if I wasn't in the throttle all the time, it sounded like ass.

not cat, LTs
I still think you are mentally retarded to not include GMMG in the poll choices...Most would agree it is the best sounding with Corsa, Borla, Magnaflow and Hooker following close. THey are also some of the best flowing besides true duals, but TDs weigh more. SLP a lot of people like too. 2otl is cool and the loud mouth is just that...LOUD!!!!!!

With stock manifold and cat's i loved how my Borla cat back sounded, but with my new setup nothing compares to TD's, 3 inch single chamber flowmaster with X pipe My car isnt a DD so the sound doesnt bother me.

Here's my car with the cutout open (cutout is just before the axle). This is when my car was a 383 Solid Roller

And, Like I mentioned earlier, the LongTubes into Borla XR1 muffler when I had the 355, CC 224/236 and TH350 tranny. That's Jason Cohen at MTI in the car...

WRONG! I PICKED UP 17rwhp/16rwtq with a open cutout!!! Set up is LPP LTs, ORY, B&B catback, 3"cut out.

17 hp with a cutout? I read reports of some test where a cutout gained about 2 hp over the GMMG.

Yeah, sorry but 17 is BS. Other forces were at work if 17hp was gained through a cutout, although I have read that the B&B is fairly restrictive.

Agreed.

I also have dual cutouts like these...

On the dyno I only gained 5 hp and 7tq with the cutouts open but well worth the sound.

I have the back to back dyno to prove it. Tested same day right after each other. OPEN/CLOSED

My Car put down 280/317 with just the B&B on it and ran 13.32 @103 B4 my build

The proof is in the pudding! Wow. That is an insanely impressive gain. I also have LPP headers and ORY being shipped to me right now, but I have a GMMG...I doubt a cutout would gain me as much as you, but even 5 hp would be cool. WOuld you say your exhaust is relatively restrictive like it was said above?

Well you can look straight through the muffler and it dynoed pretty good for the B&B being the only mod. At near stock HP levels Im sure the gains would not be as high as mine were though.
Borla wide open or a 4" set up would not see as much Im sure.
Cant really say about other set ups but Cutouts DO work!!!!

I bought my GMMG back in February, and I had to wait a couple of months to put it on. The day I got it back from the shop with the exhaust on it I had three people offer to buy my car off of me. I don't have cats on the car, so it is pretty loud! I can't wait to hear what it sounds like with headers, and a heads and cam jobby!!!
