It's pretty much exactly the same as swapping it into an LS1 car, if you check the stickys in the automatic transmission section I think there is a link to the how-to thread.
Basically, yes it's worth it if you need a stronger trans and can give up overdrive.
It's the same as putting it into an LSX car except you don't need an adapter plate. All you really need is the crossmember. You also need the kickdown switch either under the pedal or at the throttle body/carb.
if you have a factory 6 speed cross member, you can slot it towards the rear. about 3/4 of an inch and you will need to space it up by about 1 3/8th of an inch. there is also a reluctor gear swap kit so your speed o will work also. do a search here or on z28 and you will find all the part numbers.
I hope your making serious hp. The 400 is bigger and heavier than your 4L60. If done properly your 4L will handle more than the HP any LTx motor has made. And you still get the 4th gear. Look into a good trans builder and talk to them and see what they say. They also just came out with a new planetary that changes the gear ratio's so there isn't the huge RPM jumps anymore (it's actually the same gearing as a ford trans, but it's better for the straight line. Just an FYI. I personally will be keeping my 700R4 (same as the 4L60).

Actually I built a 700 that would handle 1K no problem, before this new planetary came out....bout 6 years ago. There are a few around, but it usually varies from 700-1000, depending on who you ask. The biggest killer is heat, so if you can keep the fluid cool, and keep the sun shell together for the most part they last.....that is unless you destroy the case (which I've also done). It's all dependent on the time and care put into everything. I'm anal so things work out ok for me.....sometimes. And FWIW I'd put a TH350 in these cars before a 400, they can be built to handle just as much hp and still survive....and they weigh a lot less too.
If I can dig up a website for you I will, it's been awhile since I was looking, since I learned how to do it myself.....

No its not
Weight-
4l80e- wet 255
4l60e- wet 175
TH400- wet 140
TH350- wet 130
Powerglide- wet 110

To agree with the others, the 400 is for some SERIOUS power that none of the LTXs to date have made. To be honest it'll handle more than some of the most serious LSXs are making. Glides and 400 are really transmissions that are best used on Big Blocks or bracket cars.
most shops charge upwards of $2K for a big build 4L60. Mostly because the parts cost more, and there are more gears. You can buy parts for around the $700 mark easy, but you have to do the work yourself, and without experience I wouldn't recommend trying.....

thanks for that info. when you read all the info above the cost vs each path was never brought up and thats a factor to anyone, unless you hit the lotto.

that's one of the big reasons for going to the older trans, they're dirt cheap. Personally I like 4 gears cause I DD my car. I rebuilt the trans in my 90 for $500 about 6 years ago......add a few more parts and a nice converter you've got a trans that will handle anything you throw at it. Now granted I know how to do it. As for the 350/400.....those get expensive to have built to handle decent power as well.....all depends on who does the work.

I think you guys need to do some research on the fastest LTx's and how much power they are making. Then count how many are running 4L60s. When I had my th400 built, no one had a 4l60e that would hold over 600rwhp consistantly for a long period of time. I had heard of many people going through several 4l60's from reputable builders. I only had the money to build a trans once, so I went with the th400. A 4l80e would be great if you have $2800+ to spend.
