Default (Almost) Free Opti Mods for us 92-94 folks

I bought an MSD 8481 cap & rotor kit a while back during my rebuild for the obvious reasons. My Opti died anyway sooner than I’d have liked and I reused the MSD kit. I looked at it and at the perfectly good Delphi cap & rotor I wasn’t using and decided MSD didn’t do much that any one of us could have done with what we already paid for in a new unvented Opti. So I decided to see if I could make the OEM cap & rotor vented and more durable for less than the $155.00 MSD wants for the 8481 kit.
Maybe it’s crap, maybe it’s an idea worth sharing. You guys be the judge.

Full howto PDF file attached in 2 parts...

EDIT: forgot to include that it's necessary to fill the 3 weep holes on the bottom of the dist. body with black RTV before you start. Updated version of this mod with clearer pics coming soon!

Sweet! I've thought of doing the same thing. Nice to have a visual reference for it.

I'll use it this summer and mod my Delphi cap

10 year anniversary update lolololololol...

Using straight vacuum connectors, much simpler. Sizes are 3/16" and 1/4." Vacuum harnesses new were about $65 back when, now they're in the $130 range. You can still occasionally find one you can rehab with new vacuum hose in the boneyards for next to nothing.

More pics. On the 95 & up optis, the fresh air side is right next to the vacuum fitting and driver's side wires. You can do it this way and don't have to modify the vacuum hoses to fit. I found it easy to go from the intake elbow to the top, next to the pigtail and shortened the hose on that side. It may not matter but I figured having fresh air and vacuum 180* opposite each other gives the best overall cross-flow of air. Path is from under the rotor above the metal shield and out the opposite side through the cap.

Fresh air side from intake elbow here

Inserted to the 'ears' and stays put with RTV sealing it

Remember to plug the original vent/ moisture weep holes

Vacuum side and corresponding notch in the isolator (middle piece)

Keep the notch above where the white seal rides
