Default Tranny must hate the winter! It gets all mad and crunchy!

Now that it's colder out, I notice that my tranny feels crunchier than a bowl of Kellogg's Corn Flakes. At times it won't even go into gear!
I know that it wasn't that bad last year. Is this just another sign of an aging transmission?
I switched from OEM tranny fluid to M1 synthetic ATF when I upgraded my clutch. I think my t56 likes the old stuff better.
