Default 98-99 LS1 HP vs. 00-02 LS1 HP?

I know the 98-99 LS1s came with 305 in Zs and 325 in SSs. Did they really go to bigger cams for 2000? Does anyone know stock HP ratings for a 2000 Z28? Any helpfull info would be appreciated. Thanks.

An LS1 is an LS1 is an LS1. The whole hp rating from GM is a joke. They all make roughly the same power. Sure, WS6's and SS's will make a bit more due to better flowing exhaust. They cams do differ slightly hence the !EGR in '01-'02.

My stock '00 Z28 was rated at 305hp from the factory. VERY underrated.

Default Re: 98-99 LS1 HP vs. 00-02 LS1 HP?

what unit said.

98-00 305/320
01-02 310/325

for the z28/formula/ta and SS/ws6 respectively

the 98-00 had the egr system and bigger cam, 98's had biggest injectors. the 01-02's got the ls6 intake and smaller cam but the difference is negligible. the smaller cam let them get rid of the egr system. the 01-02's also have less restrictive stock manifolds.

the average ls1 stock dyno is 300-310 depending on tranny. some dyno a little less, some dyno a little more.

but in the grand scheme of things what year dyno's what stock is pretty irrelavent because not many of us keep our cars stock for long

most stock dynos i have seen show 5 hp more if that in the 01-02...
the cam is alittle bigger in the older ones but the newer ones got the ls6 intake and !egr so that made up for it..

with a 6.0L truck cam and ls6 intake with lesser restrictive manifolds 01-02s will make slightly more power.

There is no doubt the 01-02's put out more power than the earlier years. Every 98-00 I've seen dyno was in the 290-300 rwhp(one at 306) range and for 01-02 it's more like 315-320rwhp.
I've seen the track runs to back that up also. My A4 98 went 13.27@105mph bone stock in cold weather and have seen similar year cars post close numbers. I've seen
01-02's easily hit 13.0-13.1 and in some cases; high 12's.
All of the 01-02's traps were considerably higher in the 109-110 mph range.

Yeah the 01-02's do dyno more, i have a 98z and i pulled 297 on the dyno, with mods at that time being a fipk and loudmouth, i also had ported maf ends which were making me run extremely lean to the tune of 14.7 A/F ratio, which cost me a few ponies, however my dad has a 02ss and pulled 322 with only an addition of the slp blackwing lid. I would say if he were to add a catback and an aftermarket lid he would be around 330, so they definately make 10-20 more rwhp.

It sounds odd to me though that with basicaly the same engine internals, a smaller cam, and the addition of an LS6 intake is making that much more HP than an engine with a slightly bigger cam with an !EGR. Im in no way the best at building and tuning, but doesnt a bigger cam ussualy make more power? When I get rid of the !EGR and get a LS6 intake will it make slightly more HP than an 01-02 with the same mods?

probably tuning and build variances need to be factored in. You know gm underrates the motors on purpose, that leaves them alot of room for quality discrepancy and tuning.

It's possible build quality improved over the years, and its very likely the programming is improved over the years, and its very possible an older motor might just be tired..

I too am interested in the differences being a 98 owner myself. That extra low-end and power looks nice.

Is it really that big of a difference.

That other cam must actually be better or the same roughly peak wise, because an intake alone shouldn't lead to that much power it seems to me.

Sounds like they overcammed the 98s a bit to make up for restrictive top-end airflow.

By shifting the powerband down a bit w/ a new cam, and freeing up top-end breathing sounds like the 01-02 made a wider powerband.

The question is has anyone driven both? Is it noticeable?

Anyone driven an LT1 how is the 01-02 power curve compared to that?

We have an FAQ sticky at the top of this section to cover this. No need to bring back memories from 2003.
