Another question, the horsepower differences between 98-02 don't seem to be that much. In my mind, I wanted to stick with a 2000 to 2002. Is there any reason NOT to go with a 98 or 99?

thesec engines gave me ocd.lol i wanna go faster and faster.just be carefull when you do get the car.they are very powerfull in stock form.and a whole different world than what you are used to.
good luck
If you plan to change the cam and port and/or replace the heads, then there is very little advantage to getting the '01-'02 cars. If/when you replace the cam you will probably need a stronger clutch to go into the car anyway... you can upgrade to the better ('01-'02) hydraulics when you do the clutch. The point here is that if you are going to really get into the motor and mod the thing then you will eventually replace all the parts that are a difference between the early and late LS1 cars... so save some money and get the older car. If you don't plan to get into mods that much, then by all means buy the newest car possible as they are better (I have both for anyone who wants to debate this, stock for stock there is a difference... modded its anybody's game).
As for what to mod... well search away. There's at least a dozen choices for about every single part on the car... and that's just for the stuff without many choices. Everybody has an opinion and it has more to do with how they use their car than than what is really the best with a few exceptions.

Good luck and have fun with the car.
That's exactly what I was thinking in regards to mods. Why not buy an older one since it is cheaper initially, and I'll have to switch out the parts anyway. I'm buying this car to mod it, plain and simple. I'll keep my eye out for a 98 or 99 with lower miles.
That's the problem I've found in searching cartrader, cars.com, and ebay. There are tons of LS1's out there, but lower mileage ones seem to be hard to come by. I'm trying to stay under 70,000 miles simply for my own piece of mind. I would really like to find one locally so I can see it in person. I'm also thinking of paying the seller to take the car to a Chevy dealer and have them do a complete inspection.

How extensive are you planning to go with mods? Are you talking H/C FOR SURE, or just bolt-ons for awhile with the chance of going more indepth?

Well, if I am looking for a stock car (CAI and exhaust are okay and most people do them so its impossible to find a used car without it). But I'm trying to stay away from the cars with headers, cams, heads, etc. Why? Because I know they have been romped on if they added those kind of mods. I would much rather do them myself.
This is what I can see myself doing initially:
1) new lid
2) exhaust
3) headers
4) different clutch
5) 9" moser rear
6) cam
7) upgrading the brakes
8) upgrading the suspension
9) different gears - but I'm not sure if I'd go with 3.73's or 4.11's (any advice on this would be great)
After this point (and it could be a year or two from now), I'd like to get more into the motor, maybe boring it out, getting different heads.
