Exclamation Stock Bottom End + 200 Shot = Carnage Pics/Video

Well, we wanted to test the limits of the stock bottom end in our local shop's car, a 1999 Trans Am... guess we found them.

CarolinaRides rented the local Mooresville dragstrip for a day, and this is the second nitrous pass the car made with the 200 jets in place. It is a heads/cam car that made ~380whp on motor and ~565 on the TNT 200 shot thru the TH350 trans & Moser 12 bolt w/ 4.10 gears. All dynotuned to a gnat's ass the night before. A/F was fat, I guess the stock internals just couldn't take it.

Click here for the rest of the carnage pics!

Luckily we got the fire out before the car was damaged any worse. Time to start building the iron block!

I am guessing this was not staged or had no progressive controller just a strait 200 hit on stock bottom end?

Correct - just straight TNT 200 on the stock bottom end.

The car went 6.9xx on the pass it blew. The first 200shot pass it went 6.7x blowing the tires off. The car has been a best of 6.6x with the 150shot, we were hoping for 6.5x with the 200 jets. Traction was terrible.

One day when I go forged I want to spray a 350 or 400 shot.

I met Jonathan at http://www.carolinarides.com Dyno Day put on by Joey Anderson, owner of the great NC/SC local Board. His TA has balls. I heard someone say he layed down some serious cowbell with a 6.6xx in a race at Mooresville's 1/8 mile track. In SC and NC we have lots of local 1/8 and a few 1/4 mile tracks. Darlington just re-opened in SC with 1/4. Rockingham and Jackson near Agusta are also 1/4 mile. Anyway...Johnathan and his dad have a thriving business in the beautiful hills/mountains of North Carolina. We all have Alvin Anderson of PCMforless.com a Master at tuning. (And of course his Belle, the ravshing Kieliente on this and other boards). I missed the race due to a 50th BDay in Atlanta for a great friend;however, back to Johanathan...I think he has a great platform in his T/A. I hope that he will build a 408 LQ9 or a LS2 Equiv. Mine has great speed and power...he knows more than me and has resources and i'm sure he will build a bad ass ride. I am not close to these guys but i'd reccommend a progressive controller and a 200-300 shot or maybe a 2 stage if he wishes. He's a contender for the King of Carolina Rides' competetion. Of course i'll be there too once everything is comleted. We will be sure to have some bitchin runs here and there. Anyway...this is a good guy who has a REAL good idea how to handle his issues and situations. This will be fun...so far I think the SC side has more powerful cars...we need to find out who is indeed faster!!

Joey, can you share the tuning and launch info? What is the timing set to at 3,000rpm (or launch rpm) and airflow from .76g/cyl and greater, as well, the AFR at same? I have seen the accident tuned PCM, where the timing is taken out, but only to the .76, not greater airflow because when its logged NA it only pulls .76g Besides I am curious to see how conservative the tune is. With as many ppl running 200, off the line like you did, might be a tuning mishap, or weak block. Thanks.

I'd like to hear from Joey, Alvin and Johanathan. Last time I saw the car, i thought that it was a healthy TNT w/ WOT....uncertain about the tune. This is the second pal of mine to use a simple TNT kit, one with a 150 wet and the other this one blow up. I do not fault TNT...maybe how agressive things are set up?

I have to agree. I know FastCashDave ran a 200 shot on the stock bottom end heads and cam setup on his car for over 2 years and he was not shy about it. 50+ bottles went through that car and it never cam apart. He was on a simple wet setup fogger just behind the throttle body as well.

Yes, there are several reasons for the letting go, lets list some:

Tuning:
Too lean
-not taking the AFR rich enough
Too much spark
-not taking out enough advance in the appropriate g/cyl blocks

User Error"
Spraying too low rpm
Spraying through shifts into the rev limiter
Letting off and then jumping back in the throttle sharply
Improper jet selection
Dirty fuel filter
Too low octane inducing KR
Having excess oil in combustion chamber causing KR
Nozzle placement allowing uneven distribution
Having run the car low on oil, or over revving previously stretching the rod bolts

Equipment defect:
Fuel side clogged, or stuck closed
Fuel pump quit

Before anyone jumps up and down and says the rod bolts let go, thats obvious, why? And yes, KR can do that. How? The pre-igntion causes the rattling of the piston and rocks it in the cylinder as it attempts to push the piston back down the bore earlier than it should, adding great amounts of stress to the rod bolts. I cant think of anymore right now.

Hey guys, the car being discussed is mine. As for the tune, Alvin would have to give the answers to those questions. As for af ratio, it was tuned the night before at 11.2 across the board. I run the car on a mixture of 110 and 93 octane gas, and was pulling 4 degrees of timing with the timing tuner. No knock retard was showing up on the dyno. It is set up to spray from 3500 rpms to 6500 rpms, and it works. I was also using NGK bpr7ef or whatever plugs. Everything looked good, and felt good on the first pass except for the lowsy traction at the track. Just before doing the 200 shot, I installed a new fuel filter, and arp rod bolts have been in for about a month.

Don't let the 550 rwhp numbers fool you. Those numbers were through a 8" 4400 stall converter. The car dynoed 580 rwhp and 607 tq when it was a 6 speed through 4.56 gears in a 12 bolt on the old shot. A 200 shot would have put it well over 600 rwhp. IMO, everything was set up properly, and working good. We just exceeded the limits of my stock bottom end. It had over a year of 6 second passes in the 1/8 mile on the 150 shot.

Good info there. AFR wasnt too bad, and timing, well depending on -4 from ? what and with race gas mix seems reasonable. However, pulling that much fuel off the stock rail can lead to disaster like this also. I almost grenaded my engine doing much the same. Have you pulled the plugs out yet? I'd like to see them, just for reference. And correct me if I am wrong but it looks like a set of rod bolts exited the side of the block? Sorry about the carnage but as always with Power Adders, excellent reason to upgrade.
