Default Mafless Tune!...

I have decided to convert to Speed Density and I am planning on using HP tuners to do so. I have never delt with tuning software, but I have a general Idea of guidlines. I was wondering how would I get the ecu to ignore the MAF and to souly use RPM and my MAP sensor?...Sorry NOOB question.

If you use EFILive, they have a ton of tutorials which will walk you through the whole process. Not sure about HP-Tuners, I don't use it personally.

Have you been through that process with EFI live.....I'm just curious on how to do so when I begin the tune.

Just download the software, it is free to do so, then , goto help in the tuning tool and then look at the one called "Custom os upgrade" You would need any of those FREE os systems and follow that exactly then you will be speed density with full spark and no issues.

All you have to do is set the MAF Fail Frequency to 0 in the Engine Diagnostics tab and set the DTC P0103 to No MIL Light and you are done. Or you can choose to run 1-BAR SD with HPTuners and utilize the free RTT feature that allows you to tune your fuel map and spark tables on the fly. This OS is adviseable to 1997-2000 owners, as it will delete the 1/2 resolution VE (SD) table and run strictly off of the primary VE (SD) table.

When you dont run a custom os, you do not have full spark tables either. Also, you have the DTC to turn off incorrect. You need to set P0102 to "C non emmissions" If you turn it off, the vehicle will freak out and not run correctly.

All my spark tables work fine, and PO102 is for the low input circuit (if the MAF is unplugged), PO103 is for high frequency (if the MAF is left plugged in). By setting it to No MIL Light, it still reports the error when scanned (no way around it) but does not turn on the SES light. You can disable the emissions portion of the test by unchecking the SES Enable, this will prevent the Service Vehicle light from coming on in later models. What you are thinking of is No Error Reported, that will cause the car not to run properly.

OK let me explain,

If you dont have a p0102 code thrown on the ecm, it WILL NOT BE IN SPEED DENSITY MODE.

It also reverts to only using the low octane spark tables 100% of the time and the backup VE also unless you run the custom os. A custom os fixes that issue and allows it to have spark learning and full Ve resolution.

On that code, The correct way to do it is, Set the codes to "C: non emmissions" for P0102 and then Set the mil light to off.

Jesse, that's the same thing 12secSS said, just in HPT lingo.
Also, on a 2001, actually 2000 and up, you don't have to worry about running on the backup VE, cause there ain't none.
Personally, I've never had any issues with doing SD tunes with no custom OS. Even 97/98/99 with secondary VE, I've never really noticed a problem running on the backup VE table.

There's a tutorial for setting up to run MAF-less on the EFILive downloads page ("AutoVE Tutorial")...
you can download the software and play with it (it is the actual software).
