My friend found me a car, a 98 Trans Am convertible...which is purple. I was under the impression this is a rare car if it hasn't been repainted. I have the VIN number, can anyone help me find out if it was a genunine purple car? Also any other information regarding production numbers would be great, thanks.

The VIN number won't tell you the color of the car though. I believe the color code is listed on the options code list, which should be inside the driver's door. The code for purple is 88U.
Yeah, Bright Purple Metallic is a really cool color, it turns a lot of heads. Hard to understand why it wasn't more popular, but personally I am sooooooo glad I snagged my Formula while it was for sale. Gotta be one of the coolest 4th gen colors ever produced

Thinking back, and knowing what we know now, I would have tried to order a purple WS6 Formula back in '98. Hell, they only made one blue NBM WS6 Formula in '98 (Warbird's car).
I'm also a big fan of the Sport Gold Metallic cars, especially the Camaro SS in that color.
Hell, I almost got squirrely and bought a second Bright Purple Metallic Formula. I found one for sale exactly like mine, hard top, cloth interior, only it had a 6-speed instead of an auto. Thought it would be fun to build an A4 for the strip, and a 6-speed for autoX, and have them look exactly the same.
But then I realized... my mod budget for ONE LS1 is bad enough.
Besides, if I got a second LS1, it's gonna have a 6-speed, t-tops and AQ9 seats.

I bought the convertible to keep me from turning this one into a drag car. Convertibles with cages look kinda with the top down. Can you say "Soccer Goal"? I thought you could. lol
I also enjoy dropping the top and cruising here, its always warm/hot all year long.
two purple Formulas would have been cool! It would be hard for me to resist not buying a Sport Gold Metallic SS and putting it away in storage though.

I think it was discontinued early in the model year for paint problems. I remember reading and hearing that their were quite a few orders made for this color but they were rejected because the color was discontinued.
If I had the opportunity to buy one of these (formula or t/a) w/ relatively low miles, I would do it.

I just bought this one a month ago... 76,000 miles on the odometer, I paid $9500 for it. It has some minor front end damage, but the rest of the car is in decent shape and I will fix that pretty easily. Mechanically it's solid, and seems to do well at the track. Just needs some TLC and minor body work.
Where did you find your Formula Zeke? Auto Trader or something? Put some nice chrome or polished wheels on that thing and get the front end fixed and you are all set.

I bought it from a guy on LS1.COM (Gwydion). Saw it for sale in the classifieds section on the board. I was on the list for a WRX STi, and was kinda waffling on buying one after hearing of some tech issues.. so I started toying with the idea of getting another LS1 instead. As soon as I saw that car for sale, that was pretty much it.
If everything goes well, I'm gonna put polished Fikse FM/10s on it with 315's out back.

If I had known how rare some of the colors on the 98 were going to be, I probably would've changed my order. I picked Blue Green Chameleon because I figured it would be rare, but they made 124 Formulas in this color in 98. Nowhere near as rare as purple, gold, bright green or red orange.
I almost changed my order to Bright Green actually, I wish I had, that color is wicked! Only 34 were built in that color, and they stopped it after 98.
