I only use AMSoil in both my cars. Plus they sponsor me so I get it at a discount. After looking up all their enginering tests, I don't even consider another line of products.
FWIW, I was using AMSoil before they sponsored me. Thus, the test results got me to switch, not the sponsorship. I switched from Mobile 1 to AMSoil around 2004/05. I go15,000 miles on my Oldsmobile Aurora with 5w-30.

it is easy to see that the G8 requires volumes of oil for the fuel saver and variable valve timing gizmos. that said, an element of oil is seeing less time at work or in shear in bearings or ring area. contaminants are managed at less concentrations as well.
extending oil changes commensurate with the increase in oil capacity, around 75%, is certainly reasonable.

The owners manual states to change the oil when the "change oil light" comes on. I switched to Mobil 1 synthetic at 1500 miles....first oil change was at almost 15,000 miles.
If you change you oil more than that you are throwing money away. My truck gets changed every 10K....my Mercedes is scheduled for an oil change every 12,500 miles.
You sir, are 100% correct.

Motor oil is a lot better than it was in the past and I believe the 3K limit to be way overprotective/ a way of earning money.
I have known of people that didn't change their oil for years on end and their vehicle lasted quite a while although I know at that point it was abuse.
There is nothing wrong with 8K on the factory oil.
It's not even that the oil is better (though it generally is)...the engines are sealed MUCH better now as well, and the better engine management does a LOT more to prevent getting fuel into them...
I change my oil in my Camaro when the light comes on...been doing that for 2 years, and over 80K miles now...had the oil analyzed and the report essentially said "this oil is great, run it more" only in technical terms...it generally takes 12-13K miles to turn the light on.

Anyone who uses the oil life monitoring system should check your oil often, to make sure it is full/not too low. The oil life monitoring system doesn't detect leaks or oil consumption.
Also... you guys shouldn't preach this shit too much. I see countless blown engines from cars that dont have oil changes until every 15k, and they were not beat on. Its really not that good of an idea. These GM LSX engines may be different, but that "Mobil 1 lasts 10k easy" doesn't jive with all makes/models.
Not trying to bash anyone BTW.

i run Mobile 1 in my '03 Z71 and go about 6-8k miles on it. I do almost all highway driving so when i drop the oil at that time it still is almost clean. Just slightly dirty. It doesn't burn or drip anywhere either. But man 8.8 quarts is rediculous. Do they have the same oil system as the LS7?
I only change the oil whenever the monitor says to change it. In fact I have treated all of my cars with monitors that way.
All of them went well over 150,000 miles, no issues, no consumption, nothing. My '92 LeSabre I kept the longest got a synthetic oil and filter change about every 10,000 miles average and I sold it with 310,000 miles on it last summer.
Oil lasts a very long time, changing it often is a huge waste of oil and money. Just check the level every now and then and change it when the car asks you to. You will be fine.
Where are you people comming from????sythetic is 6000 intervals. I run synthetic, and change my oil filter every 3k and oil every 6. I dont care what the owners manual says. the mini cooper requires an oil change every 30,000 miles, and guess what... his 30,000 mile cooper has a knock. Or you can save 60 bucks every three months, cheapos. soon you will have a 300 a month car payment at those oil change intervals... I would NEVER encourage putting off something as easy and cheap as an oil change. We also have a jaguar at 25k who never did an oil change. his motor is blown up behind the shop and doesnt have the money to fix it. Just some FYI, you all can do what you want.

I hope the people that are using the oil life monitors realize that you could run out of oil and the monitor stays the same, you could put water in instead of oil it would also read the same, that alone should tell you it can not be trusted.
All this extended service rec. coming from a manufacturer that obviously wants to sell you a car every 4-5 years for sales purposes and still doesn't want to stand behind these service rec. under warranty after all we all know what happens at the dealer when you go in for warranty work time and time again they nickel and dime
services are not performed cars come back with problems from the tech taking your car for a 30 mile cruise on and on.
As far as the owners manual rec. those rec. are in ideal conditions and are not rec. under severe driving conditions which can be described by your oil and your vehicle manuf. as high temp, low temp , high rpm, low rpm, long trip, short trip, towing, idling, just to name a few all these things minimize the rec. service interval
I have talked to represenatives from Valvoline(Ashland), Mobil(Exxon), Pennzoil, Shell oil, Schaeffers Oil, and they all say follow manufacturer rec.under ideal conditions which are only in a lab.
My opinion this puts us back to 3-5,000 maybe 7,000 if your vehicle is in perfect shape with a quality product.
An oil change using Valvoline Synpower 8.8 qrts, valvoline oil filter, topping off washer fluid and all other fluids, checking belt(s), hoses, air filter. cabin air filter, tire press., lights, vaccum the inside of your car if you like, wash windshield, check blades, and reset oil monitor, all while letting you know if there are any services coming up that you manufacturer rec.
Just under $90.00 after tax takes about 15 min plus a few minutes for shooting the breeze about your next mod. LOL!
being a pontiac tech using the oil life system is something u can rely on. All g8's have a 100,000 mile powertrain warranty. The L76 motor in the g8 gt is a low compression motor which means it does not require a syn oil. Only the gxp model comes with syn. With that being said as long as there is no oil on the driveway and you use the oil life system like its is supposed to be used oil changes usually between 5% and 0% there is no reason u should have any problems. And if your car is serviced by a good service department they should notify you of any oil leaks and take action as needed under warranty to protect your g8. Chose a good dealer to do your services and protect your investment.
