Default Is the G8 TapShift really that sloppy?

I hear many people complaining about the G8 tapshift being slow to react, though others have said it is very smooth.

Are some people being over critical, because they were expecting a manual like response? Or are some too soft, possibly because they have not had much experience with manuals?

I wanted to ask someone who's driven the car. I do know however, everywhere I have read, that it is superior to the tapshift found on the Grand Prix Com-G Package.

It's smooth and slow. Not as crisp as you would think. I prefer to leave it in Sport mode and let it shift itself.

I'm sure it's allll in the programing, and if you had it tuned, you could get it to be nice a quick and firm. After all, these cars are fully electronic (with maybe the exception of the TB, but quite a few are fly-by-wire, even a few Vettes were/are).

If you actually time what it takes to shift it is still faster than the manual.

I hate tiptronics, tapshifts, shiftronics etc. They always lag and usually have limitations on when you can shift and downshift.

The G8 is a nice car though. I liked my test drive

It just never shifts on time, 1-2 is the worst. If I shift mine at 5700 it might shift on time or it might not shift and hit the rev limiter. You just never know. I've not tried to shift mine at the track yet, but, maybe the next tiime out I'll give it a shot. Most who have tried the manual shift in drag racing say there car always runs slower in the manual mode.

Like all GM stuff it needs to be modified to work. At least there are a million aftermarket companys that offer fixes to GM'S oversites.

I believe there is a TSB in regards to slow shift response on the 08's.

What a lot of people think is that it will be a huge difference over just taking any other auto and shifting it by bumping the stick. The same thing applies with the new vettes, I can't count how many vette owners compared their "paddle shifted" cars to the ones in a F430 etc. which basically have a true manual trans with a clutch etc that is being shifted for you. The 430 shifts in what 60 milliseconds i think?

I had my TCM updated yesterday, it helpes, makes everything more crisp, the changes dont show up in HPTuners so you have to go to a dealer to get it done. I would recommend it. Bring the car in for an acceleration hesitation while shifting.

I think the bulletin number is #08-07-30-036.

Apparently they have to look up the bulletin to get it because it is not a recall. They argued with me saying I did not need it. BS the stock TCM tune is so sloppy.

Heres a post on the issue.

Don't update. Call VMS and rent their flash tool to reprogram your TCM. Acts just like a shift kit, and actually shifts when you want it to. HP Tuners also has the ability to tune, either way, it'll still be better than stock, but it IS in the TCM tune.

Default Tapshift

My Tapshift is right there when I shift up or down. I also found out that the G8 GXP auto is supposed to be .2 quicker than the manual.

Is the update just for manual mode or normal mode as well?
