Question Check engine light help!!!

Hi, i have recenetly (may 08) purchased a 2005 gto. Im in the army and currently deployed in Iraq. My just spoke to my wife on the phone while she was driving my M6 from the port in Hawaii to take it to our home and she said the check engine light was on. The car has barely over 10,000 miles on it and i was completly stumped on why the check engine light would be on. The last time i drove the car was on RnR in july and august. Since then it sat in my in laws where house where it was started on a normal basis and driven by my father in law weekly. Anyone have any ideas at all why the check engine light would be on? Thanks and god bless

Gas cap loose maybe?

Any local parts stores offer free CEL scans? It would save alot of time in diagnostics. Know anybody with a scan tool would be helpful.

Could be anything. Car modded at all?

My car when it was stock threw a light twice. Once for an airbox clamp being loose, the other time, it came on at the race track. Turned off on the ride home. *shrug*

My car does it all the time... and whenever im cruising in 6th gear, it blinks. then it stops after a while. it NEVER blinks unless im in 6th or just took it out of 6th... it's so wierd.

I'm thinking about changing my spark plugs...?

But my car is modded slightly. flowmaster exhaust, SLR motorsports chip, 4:10 gears, and a few other little things that i dont think would affect the check engine light...

Check the gas cap and make sure it's tight - the system relies on a firm fit @ gas cap.
It will take two or three starts to have the system clear the code itself.

Otherwise; either buy a tool or take it to a dealer to download the code to determine the problem...

If you have a hand held tuner, most have diagnostic capabilities and you can easily check the code yourself. Without a code or a good description of when it came on, your just pissin' in the wind.

Jakels1:
Sounds like you may have a spark plug/wire issue. See above^ Drive the car at a much to low RPM and see if you can feel a miss, 6th @ 30MPH/1k rpm, and slightly accell. The light may come or flicker before you feel anything.
