| Starting MMA today After reading Vendetta's thread about starting it up, and all the discussion there, I decided to try and find one. I found out that a local boxing and cardio kickboxing gym has mma, so I went to one of the practices and I figure I'll join up. They train muay thai for stand up, and jujitsu for the ground game. I figure this will really help me get into shape, plus I've always enjoyed watching UFC, and would love to get into that style of fighting. Anyway, just though I'd share. If anyone has any words of encouragement, that would be great lol.

| Nice, I do Taekwondo during the week, and MMA on the weekend. I would prefer something different like kick boxing, but unfortunately Taekwondo is the only thing that fits in my schedule right now.

| Taekwondo sucks, you should ditch that stuff before you develop too many bad habits.
I'll just warn you... Even if you get into it as just a hobby and you're not looking to fight even amateur, you're still going to get horribly addicted. I started BJJ because I was a hardcore MMA fan and I was fat as hell. I ended up getting obsessed with it and going 3-5 times per week for two years until my body started breaking down. It's an easy sport to really get sucked into.
Something somebody told me right before my first class... I'll always remember it, word for word:
"Stick with it. You'll love it. I guarantee that much. It'll be tough, I warn you now. You'll be beaten. Tired. Choked. Injured. Damaged. Bleeding. And it'll be all worth it."
Also, to help you out with the grappling side of things, here's my blog that I've kept since I started training: http://chokedout.blogspot.com/
There's not much in there recently except me bitching about my various injuries and skin ailments. But if you go back to the beginning, it's pretty helpful as far as a beginner's take on things.
If you ever have any questions on anything- technique, training coothe, how to take care of your body, etc- shoot me a PM or post up in this thread. I'd be happy to help however I can.

| Oh, I don't think I'll get addicted to Taekwondo anytime soon. I only picked it because of the location and time of the class. I don't mind the kicking and exercising I get out of it, but the forms are pointless to me. I know most of it is useless in real world fighting. The MMA they have on the weekend isn't too bad. A lot of cardio, kicking, and punching. All of it was just for getting into shape. I am down about 25 pounds in less than 2 months. But I have also been dieting and going to the gym. If I decide that I want to learn more, I would definitely look at a grappling type of martial arts. |

| Yea, this MMA is everyday, unfortunatly I can only go M, W, F. I wanted just bjj as well, because you had said it was a great way to work out...well they have either muay, or mma...so yea lol. I'll learn the ground game, but I am really excited about the stand up. Thanks for the link man. I'll post up my experience on tonight, tomorrow. I know I'm going to be dying, since I am so damn out of shape, but hopefully I will stick with it, and this will be my new hobby lol. Now I gotta drop some money on gear when I get off work.

| If that's the case then I'd concentrate on stand-up first and build your base around that. In my personal opinion it's better to build a strong base and then add to your game than to try and learn everything at once. The knowledge needed to be a good MMA fighter is ridiculously vast. Go for MMA but my recommendation would be to focus primarily on one art while adding a little bit to your game for now.
Either way, have fun! And be sure to report back with your experiences. |

| I've been training BJJ with Carlos Machado's school here in Dallas for about 3 months. Is great fun and a brutal workout. Been wanting to find someone to train S.A.F.T.A. with though.

They start with cardio, move to 30 minute muay sessions, then on to bjj, while still incorporating the muay. learn a little of everything, to keep well balanced, I guess.

The enemy isn't going to tap out. | Aside from the obvious troll in this thread (whose posts I have deleted), I strongly disagree with your point. It's actually incredibly easy to kill somebody using BJJ or MMA training. Just hold a choke for a few minutes. The brain dies after around 5 minutes of not receiving oxygen.
You really want to eff somebody up, either punch them in the throat and collapse their trachea or just use your fingers to crush their windpipe when grappling. Then sit by and watch them slowly suffocate to death.
Learn some neck cranks and just over extend the submission and snap their spine.
MMA as a sport has specific rules in place for safety reasons, but make no mistake- Anybody who trains MMA and knows what they're doing knows how to kill you. |

MMA is a good workout, but it ain't making you a killing machine. But hopefully it will get you chicks a little better than the dudes who's posts are deleted lol |

I didn't say that it would make you a killing machine. For that, you need military training and a rifle. Just saying that it is definitely possible for somebody trained in MMA to kill an opponent. |

| Vendetta...I just read about 90% of your blog. I skipped some stuff, but overall I liked it. I'm taking your advice on your first post or so, about the shorts/cup. I agree that cups suck (played football and baseball as a child), so what you said about the doctorshock stuff sounds good. That sucks about your injuries though man....How the hell did you get 8 cases of ringworm?!

| Have fun, I am confused are you taking Muy Thai or not? If so you will love it. Definately my favorite stand up discipline. I need to dabble more with BJJ but it is only offered about an hour away from where i live....I have a couple friends that know BJJ basics and have rolled with them a few times...but i have always like the standup game better. Judo and MT are extremely fun to train
Have fun and keep us updated.... |

| Anyone who frames martial arts training solely around "killing people" is a jerkoff.
Heck, you could just push someone down and stomp their head till they die....don't need special training per se.

The sides are flexible rubber so it doesn't dig into your legs or anything. The only thing that sucks is getting a nut stuck in between the cup and your leg. But that's a rare occurance and I have yet to find a cup to grapple with that that doesn't happen in.
Don't know, prone to it I guess. Got it once training on dirty mats and just kept getting it after that no matter what I did. I eventually just took a couple of months off and I haven't gotten it since. Quote:

Have fun and keep us updated.... | I started training when I was still in college, my gym is about 10 minutes away from my alma mater. But now that I commute straight from my home to the academy, it takes me like 45 minutes each way. It sucks. |

Have fun and keep us updated.... | I'm doing both. They have muay thai as a stand alone class, or a MMA class that incorporates both the stand up using muay, and the ground game using BJJ.
