Ive seen them in action at the track, and I am amazed.
I do need a pick up because my 93 mitsu might max needs to retire & I dont feel like driving my 03 Cobra every day. I was going to get me a Trans Am but I need a work horse but at the same time I want a fast one (not that I am saying that the trans ams are slow because they are not but I need a truck). So GM answered my prayers by showing me a 93 GMC Siclone. All I know about it is that it is a Turbo Charged V6 & AWD which sounds freaking fun already for a Daily Driver.
My questions are....
-are they bad or good trucks?
-are they limited to performance mods?
-are they expensive to play with?
-Is there anything I should know about this?
They are very expensive. They are very hard to work on. Performance parts are very hard to come by.
Yes, I have owned both a Ty and a Sy.
The trans' are like glass in the trucks. Don't even think about buying cladding(plastic on bottoms) They don't have a performance fallowing say like a Buick GN...
the sy/ty specific parts are very difficult because of production numbers
the jimmy or small block related parts are very cheap and easy to come by
the biggest deal with them aside from little things always needing attention is the trans. first thing i did with mine is convert it to 4l80 like my car has. if you beat on it regularly you will have 700r4 trouble regularly
they are killer off a stoplight, get pretty poor gas mileage, and do not ride particularly good, you can put people and junk in them OK, i think they look sweet, and are RARE so you will get lots of looks and comments.
The oldsmobile bravada is based off the typhoon drivetrain, it just looks different and is N/A.
If you want a cheap AWD syclone/typhoon clone get a bravada, paint it black and put a turbo on it. Or better yet drop in an LS1.
A few months ago I looked 2-3 weeks straight, seen a lot of garbage being sold at large reputable chain type junkyards. I picked up a 2001 81,000 mile complete drop out for $2500, it had the trans too but I didn't need it. It was $3000 with the trans. It had a complete VIN on the invoice that matched the VIN on the block so I verified the miles with a carfax. This was from a small independant yard. And it was literally clean up, drop in and go.

Whatever you like. Good might mean common and common to me means unoriginal and boring.

Not bad,
I would love to drop it into my 93 mitsubishi mighty max but the engine compartment on it is super small.

Quit making excuses
When I was 16 me, a friend and a little help from his step father put a 351W in a pinto. A little more common back then but we kept it stock on the outside and won a lot of street races.

lmao,
Dang well how about a 5.0 Mustang? I know I would get my ass kicked by the Ford guys & Chevy guys.
If i were you i would do an el camino with an ls2/ls6 swap. Throw a nice cam and exhaust on it any you are looking at a nice running powerfull truck that is dead reliable and i bet you could still get 20+ mpg.
I love them! A guy down the street has one of each. His ty is the blue color they made (forget the name) it is very clean. I would drive on in a heartbeat.
I also saw a white ty in Panama City FL one year. It had 17x11 ZR1s on all fours, and a WS6 like hood, it looked sick!

all the unreliability and drivability issues of a GN, combined with the weight of an s-10 blazer.
But they have the same potential, so they're cool cars. But yes very expensive, they break down constantly, and it's not going to be a car you'd drive to work everyday.
