Default New Carb LS1 setup made 40 hp over LS6

Well I spent a while on the phone with the lead engineer/production manager of MSD's new ignition setup for Carbureted Ls1's.

In 2-3 weeks mass production begins on MSD LS1 Ignition system that will completely run an ls1 with a small box with a carburetor.

It plugs into the factory crank trigger/cam sensors and still uses a map sensor for vacuum advance function (hole in intake that the map sensor goes into). Also the setup mounts quick and clean. It has a 6-way adjustable timing advance curve on it, or plug in a laptop and its fully programmable.

He was explaining to me how they dynoed a mild heads/cam combo with a ls6 intake and made 420hp on the engine dyno and swapped off the ls6 for the msd setup with edelbrocks new "LS1 Performer RPM" dual plane intake and it made an additional 40 hp over the EFI setup.

He said the edelbrock intake is a fairly highrise that flows very well and makes awesome mid range and high rpm HP, which im suprised to hear. He has no experience with the new GMMP Single plane intake yet and didnt know much about it actually either.

Also on a bone stock engine they made like 23 hp over a stock ls6 intake.

Im gong to be doing a carb setup ls1 in a lt1 camaro bodystyle for a guy soon so ill be ordering a MSD ignition setup in a month when its available.

He said pricing is $250-$300 for MSD's setup.

Do they know if this carb setup will clear the cowl on a 4th gen fbody? Certainly not the stock hood but would it clear a 4" cowl?

Man that is so cool. Its a brave new world for the LS1... we're gonna see sick HP now! Finally freedom from the wacky intakes!

I am so glad to see this topic I,ve seen on here about the new carb manifolds from GMPP and Edelbrock but have,nt seen any real test on them ,I saw where Edelbrock said theirs was worth about 20hp but 40 over ls6 is awsome!!!Can,t wait to see what the GMPP single plane will do like with some ported AFR 225cc heads and a big solid roller cam and 1 7/8 race headers and open exhaust.I,m going to build a 408 iron block to put in a 2300 lb 1981 Camaro for 1/8 and1/4 drag racing.I wonder what kind of carb was on that motor?

Was the timing advance the same or was the MSD setup more agressive on timing. Either way those numbers seem inline with a highrise manifold, I am just curious as to if anything else changed besides the intakes.

Why when LS1edit and now HPtuners software will work just fine when it comes to adjusting the timing curve.

i know but i just figured with a msd box you would get a hotter spark and a better burn

I am really considering this for my next car. Maybe a 1970 Camaro setup for street/strip with that intake on it. Except I would use a throttle body and injectors more than likely.

I'm guessing that the new ignition box works with the factory coil on plug setup and not a single coil system? $250 to $300 is really cheap IMHO considering what an MSD Digital 7 ignition will cost you.

I think that this ignition opens up a lot of doors for covnentional carburetor roots type supercharging on LS1 swaps also. The future is looking really good.

I called MSD today and they didn't know much about it and said it was only going to be sold through Edelbrock. Does anyone know anything else about it?

Yea the guys that answer the phone at msd seemed pretty useless when i talked to them last.

I got ahold of "mr clark" the engineer behind the ls1 setup and he said its not available seperate from the intake yet because they dont even have them in production yet. It will be sometime before its available seperate because at the moment they are only trying to make enough to keep up with the edelbrock intakes

Doesn't the set-up require a different hood, one with like 2-3" of cowl?

so this is a direct bolt on replacement of the ls1 intake? what about the throttle cable? any tuning of the carbs necessary?

I'd assume you would need a new PCM, or reprogrammed? I would like to know more about this, anyone have any links?!?!

It does not fit under the windshield of an F-body without some hacking. The MSD box is tuning for the spark. The carb does the tuning for the fuel nothing else needed. Or if you inject the manifold you would just add a FAST DFI.

This is my first post. I've been lurking for about a week now. I want to start by saying that this is one of the best forums on the net. Some many good actually technical posts here as compared to any other forum on the net.

I just got an e-mail back from Edelbrock about their intake. They told me Jegs is now carrying them and are selling the whole package for $833.00. I want to go this route this winter. Starting to pick up the pieces I'll need from here and there.

I figure $200 for a used cam. $500 for a short block. Give or take on that. $250.00 for a set of heads with aftermarket springs. Add the $833 for the intake/ignition system and you're well on your way. Sure there are incidentals such as exhaust manifolds/headers as well as the accessories and the necessary senors and coil packs. But that's not TOO much more. I think it will be the budget build everyone will be doing in the next couple of years. (at least those who had traditional SBCs under their hoods)
