What thermostats are you turbo guys running? I am trying to decide what to use in my 346 twin turbo Jaguar. The car will be a street only driver and has A/C. My cooling system is pretty well thought out, so I think I will be routing a good amount of air through the fluid coolers, rad and condenser. Also, my Jaguar engine bay will be a little less cramped than you F-body guys. I’m just trying to figure out if it is worth the $45 for a 160/180 degree stat or what. I always hear that FI cars run hot in traffic and I was never sure exactly why.
Thanks, -Dave

Thanks, I know this doesn't come up in FI much... I was never really sure how important it was for boosted cars. It seems like the N/A guys go crazy with bolt-ons and I thought the thermostat might be one thing that doesn't yield a high performance per dollar gain??

Yeah, the NA guys have to fight the fact that sucking air in is the least efficient way to make power so they have to pay a lot more attention to details. However, most things that work well for NA engines work well on forced induction engines, to a point. There are exceptions such as cam profile, etc.
On an FI car, I doubt you will see much if any gain from the thermostat but you might add some to your margin of safety with cooler heads. In the end, it's just a basic mod that's good to do while you are there.
If you need one, I've got a brand new hypertech 160. I ended up going to a straight thermostat housing which uses a small block chevy thermostat so I have this extra.

Cool, I may put in a cooler thermostat. My old man's vette has a 160 degree thermostat and it gets awful heat in the winter. I have also heard that a 160 degree thermostat can be tougher to tune on?? I was considering a 180 but is that much of a difference from stock? Also, does a thermostat really have a material effect on your intake temps? I was thinking the cooler coolant just kept your component and oil temps down... not so much the intake air.

I installed an Evans 160* tstat as I read somewhere on here that they flow slightly more.

So the 160* for the win?? Anybody think the 180* is a better choice??
This thing stopped being a project and turned into a "saga" around the 2 year mark. Unfortunately I live and work away from my family's automotive business, so I only get to work on the car about once every 3 weeks when I visit. My one and only New Years resolution was to get this thing burning tire in 2007, so hopefully it will see the street by the end of the year!

160...
Definitely a 160 thermostat. If you have not done a oil cooler, I would add one also. S/C motors do make a lot of extra heat, so the more ways of pulling it out of the motor the better

I also have a 160 in mine, but to tell you the truth, just cruising around or in traffic, the motor act's just like a regular n/a motor. So if it stayed cool before it should stay cool after,I would think, mine doe's.

Yea, I was just wondering why 160? Why not 140, or 180? If your car is overheating, is it because the engine is producing that much more heat over a stock setup... or is because the cooling system is modified... like running a different fan or moving an air dam? Why did the factory run 195 and what is the benefit to running hotter?
