Default Racetronix question not addressed in search... 1998 specific...

I have a 1998 Z28 and I know 1998's suck because if you ever run out of gas you kill the pump (learned the hard way three cars ago)...

I am going to install a Racetronix pump/kit in my current 1998 but had a question...

Since there is a specific kit they sell for the 1998 and then a different one for 1999+ cars I got worried that the 1998 specific kit would do the same as the stock pump (die if you ever run out of gas)...

Is this the case? Will running out of gas with the 1998 specific Racetronix kit kill the pump or will it be ok (like stock 1999+ cars)?

If so, can I just use a 1999+ kit?

Sorry for my noob questions but thanks for any input!

the years have different gas tanks, you can't swap btwn.

if you run the fuel pump without fuel going through it in either car it can be harmful to the pump

The 99+ cars have a bucket in the tank where the '98s have a baffled tank. The way that the pump mounts in the '98s is a little different too. Just an FYI though, the '98 kits do not come with the pump strainer/sock. The sock is a discontinued item that you can only get at the dealerships and they are getting very hard to find. Just wanted to pass that on as it bit me in the ***. I had to wait for a strainer to come before I could install the pump.

Running any electric fuel pump dry will have adverse effects on the pump, and probably cause it to fail. The racetronix kits have been very successfull, along with the plug & play harnesses'.

I do have a sale that ends tomorrow on the 98 kits and the 99+up kits, If you need one anyway, it's a good chance to save some money.

Let me know if I can answer any questions,

My kit came with no sock at all, let alone the one that comes with a Walbro pump.

Wow, that's a great price! Ok guys, I am going to be ordering from him within 24 hours...

I DON'T plan on running my car dry but in case it happens which is my best bet:

1998 tank with 1998 pump?

1999+ tank with 1999+ pump?

I can get a newer tank easily...

I think I'm just going to go with the 1998 and do the "access panel" mod... If I do kill it at least it will be easier to fix

Any last minute input before I pull the trigger? Oh, what the hell do I do about the sock? Thanks guys!

Switching to a '99 tank isn't just as easy as swapping them out and running a different pump. Stick w/ the tank you have and get the '98 pump.

i like my 98 tank.

sounds like if you buy the 'kit' you have to turn around and buy filters from walbro

or you could just buy the pumps from walbro and they come with the filters. i got my last pair from new era performance

I'm definetly going with the kit of ease of installation and the benefit of more current...

So, I can't just re-use the sock off of my stock pump?

Stick with the '98 tank and pump. Having a metal tank is a good thing and you're really not going to gain anything by switching.

I used the access panel and it makes life much easier.

Yes, you can. If you've got high mileage though, it wouldn't hurt to get a new one. The reason Racetronix gave me for not including one is that they would increase the price of the kit a lot. The '98 sock is much larger than what you get with a normal Walbro. I got mine through NAPA who buys them from the dealer and stocks them. It cost $25.

Hey Ed, I just called and realized we're three hours apart (time wise) which is probably why the phone just keeps ringing . I do want to order the 98+ pump from you and a sock if you sell them... PM sent.

Mark

Cool! If Ed doesn't carry the sock I'll try NAPA out... Thanks !
