Default Cause for 2000 ls1 to burn oil?

My 2000 ws6 ls1 uses about 1 qt. of oil every 3000 miles. What would cause this? I have heard that their is a slight overbore on some of the cylinders which causes oil consomption. I have also heard that the oil drain back into the pan is slow which causes the oil to get burned up. Is any of this true, or is there something else that would cause this? Is there any way to narrow the problem down to find out what it is? Any info would be helpful, thanx.

I would not really worry about a quart in 3000 miles. Many people see that sort of usage. I know I do, and I'm not worried.

Some of your usage could be due to your PCV system. Many people see oil consumption through their stock PCV system. Is there any oil in your intake or on the back of your TB blade?

I'd recommend doing a search for more detailed info since this has been discussed numerous times. However as far as I know what you're experiencing is completely normal. My 2000 T/A does the same, I believe its from oil making its way back into the intake and getting burned up that way. There is some PCV mod that can be done that helps some. Again, search for more info on that. Also some people use a heavier weight oil, or mix weights with decent results.

There is no oil in the intake and no oil on the back of the throttle body blade.

It's probably caused by piston ring flutter then. If you like to down shift a lot for engine braking or just run at high rpm and light load, the rings flutter and let the oil by them. I have the same problem, but I don't let it bother me because I enjoy driving that way. LS1's have very light ring pressure; you can replace the rings if it really bother you, but the cylinders will last longer with a little oil getting by the rings.

Do not use synthetic oil --i've said this from the get go -but Gm finally has put a buletin out on the oil consumption problem and admitts that synthetic oil is the source

According to GM, the consumption is due to ring flutter on higher RPM - low load operation. Keep the RPMs down when you don't need the power and it will use less.

I've tried both dino and synthetic with no difference in my oil consumption. Currently I'm using Redline 10W-40 and I use about 1/2 qt. over a 3,000 mile period. BTW - I have 78,000 miles on my car and my oil consumption hasn't become any worse with more mileage on the engine.

I have also tried many types of oil.

- 5W30 dino
- 10W30 dino
- 5W30 syn
- 10W30 syn

No change in usage. I have a lot of oil in my intake though. I've tried some 'verticle PCV' fixes with some luck. But now I'm trying a catch can to see how much I can grab.

Syn oil is not the source of this issue. It will do it with dino oil as well.

Again, I would not get worried about 1qt in 3K with an LS1. It seems that most experiance this. I've had two LS1 cars and they both did it ('99 and '00 models).
