ive been wanting to change the oil in my car and i wanted to put mobil 1 in as i understand its pretty good stuff. i purchased the car used and im pretty sure it doesnt have synthetic in it and has 85000 miles. ive heard its not good to switch over to synthetic if you have a few miles on the car but wanted some opinions from some ls1 owners. also, the car has an oil replacement sticker on the widnshield that says 10w-30 but ive read about 0w-40 being good in a few places. i live in southeast texas and i dont have to worry about it being cold . what weight should i run in mobil 1 if its ok, and what other brands and viscosity would you guys reccomend (non-synthetic). i dont mean to start a war here so i'll apologize early if i do.

I think you could compare this to the age old argument of "Chevy vs. Ford." While I know you don't run a completely new engine on synthetic oil, I've never heard you can't run synthetic on an old motor. My preference would be to stick with conventional on the old motor because it would probably just be a waste. If you were to rebuild it, switch to a synthetic after a few hundred miles after the rings have had a chance to seat. That's just my opinion. Anyway, I run Mobil 1 15W50 but that's too heavy for some so Mobil 1 10W30 ought to be fine.

I run 0W40 Mobil synthetic, you can switch to synthectic anytime in a engines life but if it leaks oil it will probably get worse with the syn.

Out of all the viscosity choices that Mobil 1 offers, their 0w40 is the best match for the LS1, since their 5w30 and 10w30 are on the very thin side, and are almost 5w20 and 10w20 oils. The LS1 prefers something a bit thicker for better bearing protection under hard use.

I also use Mobile 1 0w-40. My oil pressure has improved.

Dont use a fram filter with it, go to autozone and pickup a nice K&N.

I think they have some Mobil1 for higher mileage cars. I know i've seen bottles that say newer vehicle formula. I don't know if that refers to mileage or "Today's high performance engine".

the 15x-50 is considered todays "high performance engine" oil, i have always used 10w30 but switched this time to 15w50 because i thought it might be a little better for my car.. but im not sure, either way i dont think it will hurt it

Just to make you feel better, I bought my 98 with 92,000 miles on it and switched to Amsoil 10W-40. It never leaked a drop, although the oil experts say the seals may seep for a little while after switching, but it should stop soon there after.

Patman, as far as i'm concerned your the man to ask if there is an oil question. Currently i'm running mobil 1 supersyn 5w30 with a mobil one synthetic oil filter. I live in Bowling green ky/ nashville tn area and my ta is my daily. Will 0w40, which u recommended, hold up ok in the winter and summertime?

No one recomends heavy weight oil for LS1 engines. The highest weight I have seen recomended is a 40 weight. If you go to the Amsoil site there are some links to oil comparisons and that might help. Don't missunderstand me. I am not telling anyone to use Amsoil. Just educate yourself with all the facts before you make a decision!

And who might that be? If you're referring to me, yes I got a couple of free cases of Royal Purple in the past but do you see me giving them glowing recommendations? No. I tested it, I didn't like it. I admit Royal Purple's racing formulas kick *** though, they are very good. I just didn't like their 5w30.

So take your trash talking somewhere else, you're really pissing me off.

I run 15W50 in my blown Camaro, 10W30 in my '99, and 10W30 in my BBC, all Mobil 1 synthetic.

How does Castrol GTX 10W30 (non-syn) compare to Mobil 1 10W30 or 0W40?

My stroker car burns oil only under hard acceleration, mostly at the track, so I don't want to put an expensive synthetic in it! What's a good non-synthetic oil to use that protects the bearings, keeps oil pressure up and is relatively cheap?

If you are going to run Castrol GTX, then stick with their 10w40. I've seen oil analysis results on a 99TA using GTX 10w40 and it looked pretty good. Other good non synthetics would be Pennzoil 10w40, Chevron 10w40 or Havoline 10w40. GTX and Pennzoil will be a lot easier to find though.

Other good options would be Castrol GTX High mileage 10w30, which is a thick 30wt, almost a 40wt, or Castrol's Syntec Blend 10w30, also a high 30wt. Pennzoil's 10w30 high mileage oil is good too.

I still favor the full synthetics though, but all of those choices are good if you want to save a bit of $$$.

Can you blend synthetic & non-synthetic oils to get some of the benefits of the synthetics? If so, what mix for 6 quarts fo oil?
