Default Goodyear GS-D3 blows the sidewall at 7k miles

Going 70mph, boy that was exciting.. .thankfully it was on the back and the tire stayed together fairly well while I slowed down.

Called Tire Rack to see what if any mfr warranty was available since it sure looks like a manufacturing defect to me...anyway... Tire Rack customer service gal says "anything causing a blow out is not covered by a warranty"....ummm ok.....she goes on to say only stuff like out of round and similar stuff that is found when the tire is new is covered by manufacturers warranty.....that seems pretty weak to me. But, to Tire Rack's credit though, they did give me $52 off a new one.

I check my tire pressure every week, and its never been curbed, never seen over 110mph (just for a few seconds ) , there is nothing sticking into the the tread (no nails, etc) etc....sucks....anybody else had a failure on these?

What PSI were you running them? I haven't had a problem. Sounds like the tire was either defective or maybe you hit something sharp in the road that you didn't notice. Glad you controlled it though.

I was running 31 psi.... can't find a thing in the tread....i think it was just a defect...

I love these tires though.....they stick much better than any other I've tried.

Yeah, order the tires....you'll like them.

I have another theory on what happened here. The valve stem is gone from the hole in the wheel, weird...could have happened during the carnage, but just to see what I could find inside the tire, i reached in through one of the large tears in the tire, and found only the valve stem bulb....so, it's possible, that the valve stem failed, splitting right where the stem part meets the bulb, blowing all the air out of the tire in one second, and at 70mph on a 101 degree day, it was all over. I'll have to wait to get the tire dismounted to see if i can locate the rest of the valve stem, but it appears to be gone. This was a new chrome (sleeved) valve stem, maybe the sleeve cut through the stem....who knows.....

Mine should be here tomorrow. I sure hope I don't have a similar experience.

Glad that you and your car are okay.

That looks very similar to the Nitto failure that another member was complaining about a few weeks ago.

If it was your valvestem, I'm wondering what valvestem the guy running the nittos was using. This could be a trend.

Do you have any pics of this killer valve stem. I will be ordering some chrome ones soon too and am wondering if I should worry. Thanks a lot!

I only have a pic of the part that's left, the inside portion. It's one of those chrome ones that are available at nearly every tire store, basically a standard stem with a chrome sleeve that slips over the stem, and they screw on a chrome cap. I've had no problems before now and have used them alot over the years, I'm sure if there was a big issue, we'd all know about it. Probably just one of those things that happens to every 10,000 unit or so. For that matter it may not have been the stem at all.

Yeah, I run 32 to 30 in mine. Glad your car is fine. Probably either a defect in the tire or stem.

I'm now fairly certain this was a cut valve stem issue. Guess what Firestone did when they mounted the new tire from tire rack? That's right, they brought it out to me with an eyebrow cut in the brand new valve stem!!!!!!!!!.....Firestone mounted the previous tire and valve stem as well, they are a Tire Rack preferred installer, I can't even describe my anger with them, and they won't soon forget me or my tire and valve stem issue. Apparently, Boy-Wonder, the tire buster, was yanking the valve stems through the wheel holes to install them. There was no burr on the back side of the wheel hole, he just wasn't using any lube and was popping them on through. Can you friggin' believe that? All this after i explained to them before they started, what I think happened on the first tire and stem. Jeesh, I think crappy service is just the standard everywhere now. It's like they've never heard of wrongful death lawsuits......this after the billion dollars they've paid over the last several years in settlements.

Goodyear does not offer ANY mileage warranty on any of their tires. Just a defective/workmanship warranty, such as if the tires belts come seperated, out of round, etc. Tire rack was nice to give you 52 bucks being they do not offer a road hazard coverage for performance rated tires.

Quite correct. Tire Rack gets two thumbs up. This almost makes up for the 2 rebates I missed while waiting eight weeks for them to fill my order.

Glad you didn't lose control of the car... that could have been really ugly!

Customer service really is getting terrible lately, especially with large companies. Even the smallish place I work for is so focused on maximizing profits that they will hire anybody that's willing to accept minimum wage. Their quality of work is crap, but hey at least they are working cheap? That business philosophy doesn't make sense to me... They end up pissing off the customers who then go elsewhere. A business with no customers is out of business!
