Default Planning on an engine swap..

Hi, I own an '89 Firebird SSA, and I was wondering what kind of engine and transmission I could put in it, and where can I buy them, perferebly online. Oh, and I'm also on a budget of 2k for the engine and less than 1k for the trans. Thanks. Its currently a 2.8L V6 with automatic trans. I would like to keep it automatic but manual would be ok as well.

I swapped in a 3.4 when I first got my bird. Use the 3.4 long block & put the 2.8 intake manifolds & accessories. Unless someone checks the block for ID, it will look identical. the 3.4 gives you 160 hp & 200tq. I had a slight engien fire & toasted my harness, which is why it's not in there now. Also getting the 3800 & tranny for $200 didn't hurt either. You might be able to score a cheap m5 off e-bay, and find a donor car w/the pedal setup & accessories. Also, if you so choose, try THIS
Doward seems to have gotten some pretty good numbers off his 3.1, and a 3..4 should be even better.

Cool, thanks I'll look around for a 3.4 block.

What about the 5.7L engine? That would be better? I want to make some power but not kill my wallet while doing it, haha.

then find a donor car w/good motor/tranny & crapped out body. park it beside your car.
Remove your current drivetrain & sell it to pay for swap. You'll also need the engine harness from donor car & gauge cluster too. IIRC, 86 birds came w/VSS & the chebby got them in 87/88. depending on if you di carb, tbi, or tpi will determine if you need an afpr w/return line. Some people say to swap in v8 front springs, others had no probs w/the origonals. same w/the radiator.

Ok I got most of what you said, except..."IIRC, 86 birds came w/VSS & the chebby got them in 87/88. depending on if you di carb, tbi, or tpi will determine if you need an afpr w/return line."
I barely understood any of that, lol sorry I'm sort of a newbie....
