How difficult it is to do this, and are there any negatives to doing this?

Not difficult at all, just involves taking apart your intake and popping out the screen. Really no negatives to it. The screen is just there to straighten out airflow going into the throttle body and intake manifold. Taking it out will lean you up a bit. Some peolpe have seen pretty impressive HP gains just by removing it, some people have seen nothing. I have mine removed and also ported my MAF ends, and have nothing but a very nice power gain.

I wouldn't do it. The stock MAF can easily take 400 rwhp without problems. If you take out the screen, the air-flow can't be as Accurately/consistenly directed and read for the engine. Either buy a aftermarkte, or leave it alone. Just my 2 <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

O, just another thought. If you need to service the car, and you have a dick dealer, he could void the warranty. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Roll Eyes]" src="images/icons/rolleyes.gif" />

my teacher are lincoln tech, in nj. told me not to do that. he gave me like a half hour lecture on how it screws up the flow and cause's havoc with "computer controled cars".. this was in my engines class.
maybe it was his opinion..idk

Go ahead and descreen it. It'll be fine.

There is NOTHING wrong with removeing the screen. It doesn't lean you. It doesn't richen you. It doesn't distort the incoming air (GM doesn't even use them on the LS6.) We've been doing it for at least 5 years with no problems.

No screen in my 02 WS6 for a year now and was none in my 98 Z28 for 3 years.

Of course, you always run the risk of getting weird bug parts that very strangely get past your air filter. In North Dakota, when the "bug season" begins, I often find a few bug wings or what not resting against the MAS every few weeks, and I remove them carefully. Yuck.

His experience is in keeping a many cars running, without any "focus" on a particular combination.

Colonel and others here have experience with this combination, so they're experience is more focused.

Anyone that would phrase screen removal as "causing havoc" doesn't really know as much as they should on this subject or just enjoys running their mouth. Plain and simple, it just isn't true...ASE master tech or not. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

Removing the MAF screen may cause the car to run a tad leaner (prolly negligable) since there's going to be more air flowing through but the same calibration. Other than that, I don't think it would cause any damage. I've run a GMAF for 2 years now and it is ported and no screen. It's not like any big chunks are going to fly in the MAF (unless you don't run an air filter)

I've done it on the following vehicles that have been in my driveway (in model year order) with current mileage or mileage that I got rid of it at;

-1995 Lumina (3.4L DOHC V6) 35,000
-1996 Monte Carlo (3.4L DOHC V6) 115,000
-1997 Tahoe LT 4x4 (Vortec 5700) 57,000
-1998 Aurora (4.0L Aurora V8) 81,000
-1998 Camaro Z28 (LS1) 14,000
-1999 Chevy Malibu (3.1L V6) 41,000
-2002 2500HD (Vortec 8100) 16,000

So between all these vehicle's, that's 359,000 miles all with descreened MAF's. All these cars run perfectly fine! One does nearly 400 rwhp one pulls 16,000+lbs regularly. All of them except the Camaro are daily drivers. I'm sure that if removing the screens created 'havoc' I'd have encountered it somewhere in that 359,000 mile window.

As to it straightening the air (which is the most common excuse given for keeping it), remember when you had the stock intake lid and air baffles I.E. "silencers" on the car?? Air was flowing every which way but straight with that setup. Which is the reason the MAF has/had a screen to help re-straighten it in order to properly be measured.

HOWEVER, 99.99999% of us here have replaced the stock restrictive intake with an aftermarket lid and an aftermarket bellows into the MAF and then into the TB. In which case, these aftermarket lids already funnel the air STRAIGHT into the MAF and into the TB, so there is no need for the screen.

Sorry, I know lots of ASE certified techs, but like previously mentioned, their expertise is keeping cars running, not optimizing them for maximum power and performance. Hence they are a little jaded and quick to **** on your parade when you want to alter something from a stock state.

my vo-tech teacher said that takeing off the screen on some applacations is shooting yourself in the foot. but he also agreed that it helped air flow considerably and wasn't too bad if you are carefull in removing it and allowed the computer time to adjust to the small amount of extra airflow. i've had mine removed for about a year and not a problem yet. i didn't notice any sotp difference.
