Default L92 Heads/Intake - Cam Question

If I end up going to the L92 Heads and Intake combo will I need to use a different cam in my LS2? I just don't want to throw a cam in now that wont be used to it's potential if I end up going with this setup.

TIA

Depends on what cam you have...

i think he means stock LS2 cam... you wouldnt NEED to do it, but if you put in one of the big cams you would see massive gains from going from 243 heads to the L92s. if you put in a big cam, it wouldnt be at its potential untill you got the other heads, the choking point right now would be your heads themselves. you would still make close to 400 rwhp with something like the G5x4 and an auto. the gains would jump a lot with the L92 heads though

I'd be using the HPE C Cam. 236/238 .601/.605 112 LSA

I've email ED my custom cam checklist multiple time and he has never gotten back with me. He lost my business.

How well will these heads hold up with a larger cam? Thinking of getting the HELION cam....

One thing a lot of people are forgetting si that these heads have large chambers (~70cc IIRC) and with all of the big cams ive seen paired up with heads, the numbers they put down are less that steallar without any kind of bump in compression.

youll still be around 10.1/2 to 1. from what some others have said you want a cam with ~6* of split to get some more low end.i was thinking along the lines of a 232/240 for my motor.

When discussing split are you really talking overlap? Or do you mean more crutch for the exhaust duration?

I think he is talking crutch for the exhaust. Exhaust flow is the weak spot on these heads in box stock form.

A cam designed for an Ls1/Ls6 head with 80-90% Intake to exhaust efficency wil not be as effective on a head with a 60% I/E ratio like the Ls7 for instance. This is why the split on the ls7 is so large (20 degrees). Its not that exahust port is so bad on the L92 its that the intake port is so good.

As for Ed, you can send him your specs, but he isn't going to send you cam specs back until he has cash in hand. I've bought cams from him and always found him to be very helpful and responsive. Just don't expect stuff for free...

BTW on an unrelated note, this is my 4000th post... Horray for me spending far to much time on this site....

congrats and thanks for the insight.

this is what I was concerned with as well since the L92 heads have different flow characteristics to the 243 heads. I want to get a cam first but if I decide to go with L92 heads I would need to match the cam to them. I am thinking now it would be better to just save and do it all at the same time.

I don't expect anything for free. I'm willing to pay a premium price for a custom cam. If the individual would have just sent a quick reply saying "hey I think I've got something that will work for exactally what you want, here's the price" I would have been happy. Instead I get no reply and see him post on different forums all over the net, so he lost a customer. His loss.

Comp Cams will grind you a cam built to your specs for the same price as an off the shelf cam..they did one for me and it took two weeks to have delivered to me..I went through Thunder Racing..they will do a cam doctor print out on the cam when they get it from Comp and ship you the cam and the cam doctor print out..I don't know if anyone else offers this but I really liked it..call Geoff at TR and he will be happy to help you...

Something is not right. Ed has a very good reputation. Ed, by far has been the most supportive vendor that I've ever dealt with. The knowledge and support are second to none.

I'm curious if these can be milled enough to get to the 11:1 CR. I hear they have a thin deck. I would also be concerned with PTV issues. I guess I'll see.

Yeah, im pretty sure they can be milled to the desired chamber size, but the PtV is what id start to worry about.

thats i was leaning towards trick flow heads for a ls2 with the raised valve.. i have the big cam that bleeds off alot of comp. down low. getting a set milled to bump me to atleast 11.to1 would make the cam run alot better and not have to worry about a valve crash

... and we can't forget the L92 comes from the factory using pistons with valve reliefs.

can someone please clarify the head numbers for me.. so the 853 and 241 are both ls1 heads? I know the 243s are ls6 heads whats the difference between the first two and between those 3, the l92 and the 5.3 heads, which have the most potential?
