Angry I blew up my motor!!

I was racing my car at the track and I accidently lost my nitrous jet. (I run a wet system.)
So I basicly ran a 300-400 shot on my car for 2 full gears.
I had traction problems so I didnt really use first gear that much, but when the nitrous kicked in, I still ran a 13.1 lol. (Not an 11, but still fun)

Now I have at least one blown head gasket and one blown valve cover.
I probably ruined my piston rings/ringlands.
I am planning on ripping this thing apart all the way down. I plan on replacing everything I can within my budget.

Basicly what I am asking is... Are there any tips, tricks or problem areas to watch out for when I am doing this removal and rebuild?

Any basic advice?
I am also looking into building up the motor a little. Port/polish the heads, mill down for higher compression, forged/titanium anything I can for the budget.
Now before you ask what my budget is.. let me just say... CHEAP!!!
lol.
This couldnt have happened at a worse time. I dont have hardly any money. What I DO have, however, is plenty of time.

So... thanks for your help and anything you offer is appriciated!!

well the first tip/trick would be to stop running 400 shots on a whim

I saw that comment coming.
It was an accident. I wasnt getting any nitrous from the solenoid, but I was getting fuel. After a couple of resets to the box, I took off the nitrous hose from the fogger nozzle to see if it getting any nitrous to the engine. It purged fine so I knew the bottle was open and everything there was ok.
Well, it still didnt spray anything, so i put it back together. I didnt realize that the jet fell out. I did one last reset and tested it. It worked so I lined up the car.
I then rolled softly rolled through first gear and then punched it. I sprayed all the way through second and third and part of fourth.
The bottle was at about 1100 psi and this was the first actual shot out of it. The little test shot was nothing.
But that explains how I lost the jet and ended up running a 300+ shot.
Very painful.

Tear down the motor and see what youve got that salvagable. Chances are youre gonna need new pistons and likely rods. Check the cyl walls for scoring or cracks and hope you dont need a new block. Hopefully he heads arent beat up either. Assuming the block and heads are still good, you could get mahle piston/rod combo on ebay and buy a bearing set and probably get everything back togather for just over a grand in parts.

Told ya already Josh, your best bet is to pull the motor and find a replacement. Then you can go through this one with a fine tooth comb and see what is salvageable.

Are you sure the short block is even damaged? Hell, put some new gaskets on it and roll out.

Maybe a new forged shortblock would be the best way to go here.

Yea, thanks James.
I dont have the money to buy a new/used engine outright.
I plan on putting this one back together, provided I dont need a new block.

Just messin. I have a job. I am professional tattoo artist, but I have other bills taking priority right now. Like house payment, car payment, cell phone, food and such.
I will be into much more money soon, just being patient.
Thanks, though. lol.

I understand your situation. However "tossing head gaskets" on this one without inspecting EVERYTHING can coust you more later if something indeed got damaged.

That being said, you'd be ahead of the game if you ponied up the extra few $ to get a running motor and call it a lesson learned. What if you pull the heads on your current motor and find it trashed? You are still going to need to find a replacement. Not to mention the cost of repairing whatever MAY be trashed in this motor would likely cost more than just getting a replacement now and worrying about the damage later.

Not my car or money though, I just thought i'd offer up insight and try and save you a step or three and a LOAD of frustration based on my experiences. Best of luck.

For now, rip the heads and inspect the pistons....
It doesn't cost a dime to do it, and it'll give you clues on how bad it got damaged.

If you have busted pistons, then you have no choice but to rebuild. At least you'll know !

Good Luck !

I will be doing exactly that. Besides I want to learn as much as I can by diving into it face first. lol.

James, I will probably end up getting the replacement motor if indeed it does turn out to be screwed beyond repair, but I still want to build it either way.

Maybe with a 2 stage and progressive controller and a BUILT motor you can do a 400 hit.

You were not running a 300 shot. A 300 shot would have added a bunch more fuel to go with that extra N2O (by the way, unless things have changed dramatically in recent years, even a 400 shot system still uses a N2O jet). You leaned it way out and I would suspect serious internal damage (lifted ringlands, broken pistons, possibly some block and head damage). Good Luck

I am completely guessing on the "300" shot. I was running an open hose 1200 psi (hot bottle) shot with the jet for a 125 shot of fuel.
So I know I leaned it way out.
Here are the pics of trhe damage... some are blurry, but it was the best i could do.

I plan on taking more after I pull the block the rest of the way out.
I'll post more when i do that.

I was impressed at how quickly my friend and I pulled this much apart. Neither of us had ANY experience on an LS1. But we had that head off and out in about 6 hours. Not too bad, IMO.
