I should be getting a 2k2 WS6 6 speed this month, how should I drive the car (easy, hard, redline, etc.) and for how long?

At what point should I add synthetic oil?

I'm surprised you've gone a day without a reply. In any event, a lot of people will tell you to drive it like you plan on driving it after the break-in period. I've also heard not to use the cruise control at all (if equipped) so as to prevent remaining in the same RPM range.

Basically, I didn't go over 60 mph, or 3500 RPM for the first 500 miles, at which point I changed the oil. You'll notice some metal in the drained oil since the engine "deburs" itself while being broken in, which is why I kinda baby it until the first oil change. Haven't had any engine problems so far.

This is good advice in my opinion. Take it easy for the first 500 miles. Change the oil. Then drive the **** out of it. The guys who seem to get the factory freaks seem to drive like it's their last day on earth. I'm willing to bet that it has a lot to do with beating on the car.

I took it easy for about 300 miles (I still went WOT a couple of times though <img src="images/icons/wink.gif" border="0"> ) By the 500 mile mark (and after the first oil change) and ever since my car has seen only two throttle positions, idle and WOT <img src="images/icons/smile.gif" border="0">

It runs pretty strong.

The engines are beat on before we see them...they do a full "dyno" type deal...

It seems the people who get on their cars a lot when they are not "broken" in have the faster times...and the people who baby them have the slower times...

or it could just be that whole monday and friday car thing... <img src="graemlins/gr_punch.gif" border="0" alt="[fight]" />

I put synthetic oil in at 1000.....

I drove the car like I had some sense for the first 2500 miles, varying the rpm. Then I took the car on a 2500 mile trip. Came back from the trip, took the car to the track that weekend, and voila, 13.21 @107 with only a muffler. Pass before the trip 13.59 @ 104. Breaking in does help. I had the same 60' of 2.179.

Followed owner's manual directions most of the time: below 3500, vary speeds, yada yada <img src="graemlins/gr_zzz.gif" border="0" alt="[boring]" /> . Went Synthetic at 1500 miles. <img src="graemlins/fluffy.gif" border="0" alt="[Fluffy]" />

i dont believe in break ins.my first new car was a 91 Z/28. i beat the **** out of it and today it has 91000 miles on it and still runs strong. its my every day car. when i bought the formula same thing beat on it from the time i rolled away from the lot. with 1000 miles on it, i took it to route 66 and pulled a best e.t of 13.22 all stock.i also just got a new vette and punch it rather often. the factory does test these motors before they leave the plant. they dont beat on the motors nor do they baby them either.
the weird thing is that it seems that guys who beat on there cars from day 1 do have stronger cars.

I would definately change the oil at 500 miles. I took it pretty easy on mine until then - Other's beat the crap out of them from mile 0. <img src="graemlins/fluffy.gif" border="0" alt="[Fluffy]" />

I ended up switching to synthetic at 3000 miles (dino oil at 500 and 1500 changes).

Some people drive it like they stole if from day one, but I would wait until the first oil change at 500 miles at least and ALWAYS wait until it is warmed up before hammering on it - just my 2 cents.

I agree. I like to get that first oil change in first before the major beating begins! And I ALWAYS wait till the car is fully warm before hammering it.

Step 1) Idle around block till warm
Step 2) WOT <img src="images/icons/smile.gif" border="0">

The best thing to do for your car especially when you upgrade internals eventually is to let the car fully warm before you hammer it...

That's why I wish more cars came with oil temperature gauges, because you don't want to drive a car hard until that oil has warmed up. The coolant warms up faster than the oil, the oil temp lags behind by a few minutes after a cold start.

i have heard varying info on this topic, and buying a brand new car soon, i want to get the best info possible.

my comments/questions/concers:

1) i have heard/seen people that drive their car hard all the time, have slightly faster cars than the ones that are babied- It seems the more you punch it, the faster you go!

2)oil, some people say change at 500-1000 to get all the metal shavings out, while others say wait a little bit longer, the metal shavings help to break in the rings and they polish the cylinder walls. They say if you change it too early that you might never get the motor broken in properly.

3)Trans- does a trans build the same "shavings" like in the motor? Would it be a good idea to replace the filter after the first few thousand
miles?

4)Rear- Should you change the rear end fluid after the first 5-7k? I would think a new rear would build up shavings within the first few thousand miles, and that fresh gear lube would help it live longer. What do you think?
