Why engine oil cause noise
I have a 2002 trans am and when I use mobil 1 it slaps a lot. But, if I use Penzoil synthetic it is quiet. I wonder what is in the Mobil 1 that causes the engine to be noisey.

I have been using a racing synthetic oil in my 99 Z28 1LE since new. It is 0w-5($10qt) weight and I now have a little over 18k on the clock. Define what you mean by slap. Have you checked the valve lash, and all.

Re: Why engine oil cause noise
my 99 LS1, which I bought used in 2000 used to have a ticking sound. the guy I bought it from used mobil 1 10-30 cause that's what GM recommended. hell, they got it right on the filler cap fer chrissake!
anyways, I've never had an ounce of respect for mobil oil since I saw they're name at the bottom of an oil quality chart published by the SAE people back in the early 1970's. (my auto shop teacher got it from who knows where) at any rate, my first and second oil changes were to redline synthetic 10-30 oil. guess what? the engine doesn't tick any more.
could it be mobil oil is still at the bottom of the list? haven't seen one since high school, but my results speak for there self. I'll never put mobil oil in my engine unless it's an emergency. just my $.02

I don't believe Mobil 1 to be at the bottom of the list by any means, it's the best stuff you can buy that's commonly available in most stores. I have an SAE paper from 1998 which shows it to be an excellent oil and this was before the new SuperSyn which has proven in oil analysis to be even better.
The one problem with Mobil 1 is that in some LS1s it burns more oil and has more piston slap, simply because their 10w30/5w30 is at the thin end of the 30wt range. The solution if you wish to use M1 is to mix in 2qts of 15w50, or you could also try their 0w40 European Formula.
