Don't be so quick to overlook the tried and true....with the right combination these heads can still lay down the numbers with the best of them.

Its been my contention for some time that a well thought out combination could easily clear 500 RWHP in real street trim (and not just poke 500 with a spike or playing with dyno smoothing). A good friend of mine (Dennis Palla) who's car previously made approx 490/440 on A&A's dyno (close to two years ago) turned out to be the perfect donor car to try out my theory. Turns out Dennis busted a timing chain and caused a few unhappy valves to unexpectedly meet a few unhappy pistons but was lucky the damage happened at low RPM's and the shortblock was salvageable (piston damage was minor). I personally went thru and freshened the heads....replaced about a half dozen valves that were tweaked....milled them to clean the decks as well as bump the CR a little...and prescibed a custom cam that I felt would help us to achieve the goals set forth above. For now it will be referenced as the Mamo "Mystery" cam.... No it's not as big as some of the larger cams on the market....in fact the intake lobe is in the 230's....but it worked well and provided the top end rush we were looking for. As in any fairly aggressively cammed 346/347 applications the bottom end TQ numbers aren't stellar but are in line with what we expected them to be. Once the tach see's anything north of 4000 RPM's this package comes on like a freight train.

About the car....its almost a dead ringer for my older 346 combination that routinely made 475 RWHP (and a few 480 pulls) with the AFR 224/228 camshaft....another reason I knew a similar set-up with a more aggressive cam and a little higher CR could comfortably clear 500.

The car is a C5 2002 Z06 (with power robbing 3.90 gears btw) and the numbers posted below were achieved thru cat's and the stock Z06 rims and tire (not lighter weight slicks or ET streets). Also, all of the pulls made today were at 180-185 fahrenheight at the start of each run. Basically simulating the way this car will run and make power on the street.

The car is also fitted with the following....(as I said...similar to my own C5)

Mezeirre EWP
Exedy Twin disc clutch
Mamo Ported FAST 90 and ported LS2 TB
Yella Terra 1.7 UltraLite rockers
AFR 205's milled to 58 cc's (11.75 CR)
Custom Comp Cam 23X/24X 11X LSA
Diamond Flat tops with 2cc reliefs
Eagle Rods
Stock GM crank
.040 Cometic Gasket
LG Pro Longtubes
M12 stock Z06 gearbox
B&B Catback
Crane Billet Lifters
ASP Underdrive Pulley

Note that my role here (besides the freshening of Dennis's slightly wounded cylinder heads) was mainly in choosing and selecting parts for the combination. The actual dyno and tune was performed today at Haddad Motorsports in Inglewood CA and the actual install handled at a different shop almost two months ago. A big thanks to Mike Haddad (the owner) and George (the tuner) to get there early on a Saturday and bust their butts the whole day dialing in this combination. When Dennis told them I had hoped it would clear 500 RWHP the tuner told Mike that wasn't going to happen....when the first rough pull to only 6000 netted them close to 475 he realized he might be wrong....LOL

Also note that this package is a little more aggressive than I normally prescibe for a pump gas combo on 91 octane but I know that Dennis normally runs some Torco (an octane additive) so he doesn't have to worry about getting a bad batch of 91. I am confident that most of you with 93 octane could get the same results on straight pump fuel and pulling back the CR to 11.5 would have made this a very pump gas friendly 91 octane build (enough camshaft in it to lower the DCR enough to pull it off).

Also, note how well this carries the big numbers all the way to 7200 where it is still making 493 RWHP....more than most achieve at their peak. Also, the peak TQ numbers are very respectable for a healthy cammed 346 and the curve carries flat well into the 6000+ range.

I anticipate 127-128 MPH trap speeds in the month to come with the typical D/A in southern CA which usually isn't anything to write home about (800-1500 above sea level common for the months ahead)....will follow up with more info pertaining to that as things progress.

BTW, the previous combo ran 125 MPH at a similar D/A mentioned above and we felt a little more aggressive driving and shifting could have improved on those results but didnt have time to find out thanks to his timing chain giving up the ghost.

Tony,

Your ability to make power with quality parts is masterful. I have followed yours and PatrickG's posts with interest for the past year with the attitude of keep my mind, eyes, and ears open and mouth shut.

Might I ask why the secrecy on the cam specs.....not to start trouble. If ya want I'll take a PM to keep the post on target.

Nice numbers, too. I bet your customer is very happy.

Is this on the same dyno that made 381 ft/lbs through an A4 GTO with Headers/Stock Catback/Intake/Tune UNLOCKED?

I think Tony posted that about the cam to kinda poke fun at the all the "SUPER SECRET" cams we have had of late. Seems everyone has a special black magic formula cam that is top secret. I'm sure Tony doesn't care about the cam specs, just joking with it.

Great numbers Tony! Congrats on putting together a killer combo......AGAIN!

Tony,

As usual your threads and posts are well structured, clear and informatives.

You are a great help to the LS community for sure, and for me the confirmation that a combo well thought with clear goals and reasons and finaly delivering can be discussed openly on a forum.

One more thing is that your customer service is at the level of your information, my FAST MAMOFIED is a great piece of art, limit to be a shame to mount it ...was so perfect to watch...

My husband and I just finished installing a pair of "custom" milled AFR 205s. I have not had the pleasure of taking my "TA BEAST" to the track but my dyno #'s turned out great with an "unlocked", high-stall TC. Do not care to post them because there are some haters on here but it was well into the 400s; H/C only and no power adders. I look forward to piloting this "fastest turtle in the world" (cause she's green) and seeing those 6s and 10s pop up!! Thanks for the awesome heads and tell Jeremy thanks for all his help!!

Needless to say after having his car down for almost 5 months (since the chain busted) my buddy Dennis was elated with the results as well as his first spirited drive off the dyno. His car was by far the strongest stock displacement vehicle the guys at Haddad had ever seen.

Regarding the dyno it was a dynapack which I have to say is a very impressive piece of equipment. It works more like an engine dyno than a chassis dyno in some respects....I was very impressed with it. I feel it is a very representative of a DynoJet in regards to its numbers (which is kind of the "standard" most use here) based on my car's output (which I have had on a few other dyno's) as well as personally seeing an 05 GTO with headers and an airbox (some minor bolt-on's) roll 340 something RWHP a coupe of weeks ago (inline with what you would expect).

Also, note that Dennis's RWTQ starts at a very realistic 350 or so ft/lbs down at 3-3500 RPM's....exactly what you would expect from a 346/347 with a sizable stick in it, and his peak TQ remained about the same as when his car was on the A&A DynoJet a year or so earlier. I told Dennis that I expected his peak TQ to remain close to the same (or a little less) with the bump in CR offset by the bigger lobes and wider LSA I choose but carry much further out hopefully making our 500+ goals a reality. The beauty of this combo IMO was how well the TQ did in fact carry (without a huge cam) bringing in the HP as a function of RPM and mathmatics.

Concerning the DCR I dont know exactly what it was and of course it will vary depending on who's program you use to run it on (it really is a theoretical tool that I feel people on the Internet have begun to place to high on emphasis on versus's real world proven results and experience), BUT....if I had to guess I bet it would only be in the low 8's. Hell, the DCR on my own 383 is only in the high 7's yet that engine just popped 497 RWTQ and 543 RWHP with a larger header and some addtional time spent tuning on the chassis dyno. While more static CR would have helped both (the DCR and power output) my point is the engine still makes huge power in spite of a DCR most would agree is on the low side. I think to date it is still the strongest pump gas 383 I have seen but could be wrong.

Concerning the cam specs John02SS pretty much hit the nail on the head and anyone seriously interested in building something similar with our product can call me personally at AFR for more specifics....

Looking foward to some track results....I may even have the opportunity to pilot this baby down the 1320 myself so Im looking foward to that.

Dennis....how bout them keys.....LOL
